I have a 04 and I filled it up yesterday. Today I get in it and the fuel guage is on empty, the check guages light is on and on the heads up display is all the way down. It was fine yesterday. Any ideas? I hope it isn't the sender.... Thanks

Before you start taking anything apart...try a bottle of "Sea Foam" on a full tank. It just might do the trick. You can get it at any Auto Zone. If your sensor (sending unit) is clogged or dirty, this product will help if not fix the problem completely. Good luck... "Ricovette"

are you running the tanks all the way down and are you using a good name fuel? I used two bottels of chevron and two tanks and have not had that problem for just about two years

I have read many posts about this. I use Seafoam once a month and haven't had this problem. A good fuel additive will definitely fix your problem. :thumbsup3:

This is a known problem that's caused by a high sulfur content in the fuel that contaminates the fuel sensor.
Adding Techron to what's already in the tank and changing the brand of gas should help after a couple of tankfuls. :stirthepot:

Use Seafoam, and my opinion on the issues with Corvettes, well the guys with Mustangs, Vipers and all the other sports cars have just as many.

Down, but not to where the light comes on, i tried it with a full load and a half load of fuel. And i have had 3 302ci Mustang GT's over the years with alot more miles than my current Vette and never had to do half the crap i do on the Vette!. The Vette is great i love it but damn it has alot of problems and yes more than my other cars!

Just my two cents here. It seems that everyones C5 is affected a little differently than everyone elses. That is; no two are the same. Some can run one bottle of additive through and the problem dissapears for a very long time until of course; it re-appears. Others have a very predictable condition. In my case, I have a 2000 6sp manual and my LOW FUEL indication appeared the day I drove it home from the dealership. On my next fill up I added a bottle of Techron (which I very much doubted would work) and wow! the problem disappeared! So, on the next fill up I refrained from using the Techron additive and guess what......the LOW FUEL indication came back. So after many tankfuls and observations of how much "I" need to use the Techron I came to the conclusion that I probably am better off to use it on every fill up. In a pinch I have used cheap Gumout fuel system cleaner ($2.99) and it has worked for me. That is to say; I had an existing LOW FUEL condition and I added a bottle of Gumout (treats up to 20 gal.) and the LOW FUEL condition went away. So in my case the Gumout product will work for me but it may not for others. I don't know exactly what is chemically happening to cure the problem when the additive is "doing it's thing" but I read in a GM Technical Service Bulletin that the wipers on the sending unit are silver plated and the additives in todays fuels are eating away at the silver and the silver is depositing itself onto the copper windings of the sender card which in turn sends erroneous voltages to the PCM which the PCM is programmed to just display LOW FUEL when it cant make sense of the voltages from the sending unit. I have searched hi and low for someone out there in internet land for some kind of replacement sending unit that will fix the problem but could find none. If I replace the sending units with new GM parts then it is logical that the problem will just re-appear sometime in the future. I am told that GM never did anything to "upgrade" their sending units for the C5 so a new unit is just as prone to the "new fuels" attacking it. In my personal opinion I think that's lazy on GM's part because the C6's dont have this problem so they obviously know how to overcome it. So why cant GM offer an upgraded sending unit for the C5 that has C6 reliability? Maybe they do and I am just not aware. Just going on what I have been told. Maybe some of you guys have some greater knowledge than me. Anyway, just my two cents.........:thumbsup3:

Got my 1st Vette last year, C5 98. Had it for a week and had the same problem after a fill up. Took it back to the dealer to check it out. They said both pump readings were bad and needed to be replaced at the tune of $2300.00. I asked why so much “Well we have to drop the tanks to change the pumps”. I said I would call them back to let them know about doing the job and left. Came to SV and read about Techron. Put in one bottle of Techron in the tank, problem fixed! ($8.00) I use it every 3rd or 4th fill up.
Two days later the dealer ship called me and said they could do it $1500.00 since I just brought the car. Told him it was fixed and hung up. From what I have learned from this site he will never see this car again!

I started using Sea Foam in mine because of the same problem, it cured the problem, but now my Vette is addicted to the stuff and has to have it every tankfull or the light will come back on.

I keep a can in the trunk along with a tool set with belts, etc. Never know when, where, what will break next. I don't want to see her on a tow truck.
