i've got an 01 and am getting what sounds like a wheel bearing noise from the rear end most noticeable at 55 mph. i put it in the air and ran it and the noise is loudest on the driver side where the axle meets the differential. any common problems with these that anyone knows of? than ks

If you suspect the wheel bearing is going out on the driver's side, try this: Take the car out make some fairly fast (40-50 mph) sweeping right turns. To put a heavy side load on the bearing. If the noise gets louder, then it probably is a bad wheel bearing.

the noise does not get louder or softer when making sweeping turns. could it be a carrier bearing?

It could be. I suggest you siphon out your oil and look at it in the direct sunlight. To see if there's any powdered metal in it.

That is good to know even if this is not a frequent issue.

Just replaced pass. front bearning assembly. $700.00 later it is all quite. Check for grease. I knew the bearing was going bad quickly. Rear bearing assemblies are cheaper to buy, but i have been told the 1/2 shaft has to come out.

Have you gotten a price to do the rear?

One common problem is with the splines on the half shaft. They tend to oxidize and have to be cleaned and lubricated. They tend to make a clicking sound.

Really? I have not heard of anyone cleaning their half shafts.
