The crazy part is that the oil light never came on, thats what was disturbing.
We are guessing that it's the light itself?

Mine is a 92 and I tend to check both Engine and Tranny oil levels from time to time. These are older cars, you always have to be on top of them to prevent something worse.

The oil pressure light is only there to tell you it's too late. Once it lights up, engine bearing damage has probably already happened. If it lights up when you're just cruising and you notice it IMMEDIATELY, you're lucky. But if it lights up when you're running your engine at full throttle, your bearings are probably toast. Literally.

Mine isn't a dd, but I check it each time before I go anywhere in it.

Even my dd, I check every other fill. Doesn't take but a few minutes.

My ex-wife never checked it on her dd. It ran out, threw a rod out the side of the block on the way home from work, and I spent a weekend in '07 putting in another four banger in the '99 Malibu.
