Has anyone cut the one big muffler in the center below the drive shaft out, and put in straight pipe?

If so, what'd it sound like?:burnout:

That is the cat?

And it would roar like a train.

On a 93 that's a resonator. Cats are further up.

Haven't heard one done that way but I'd expect a slight increase in sound.

On my 92' I've deleted my resonator(that one big muffler) and put straight pipes in place, it gave me a slight increase in sound, both at idle and acceleration. I plan on deleting my cats also sometime this year. Anyways here is what a deleted resonator sounds like:

Great reply. Wonder what it would sound like with the resonator and no mufflers..

btw do you still have the old resonator? Would luv ta cut it open and have a look inside...

Cut it out and replace it with an X pipe.

I did the muffler delete first. Then after reading threads on CF about the resonator I took the advice of others and replaced it with a Magnaflow dual in/dual out muffler. The idea was to reduce resonance and give a better tone. It was really just a waste of money, I could not tell any difference. The only advantge in the Magnaflow dual in/dual out also serves as an X-pipe.

That's what a I was thinking. I like noise, but I hate that drone while just holding speed..

I did the job with a friend's dad, I left him the resonator. I did take a look inside and it was pretty much a straight shot lol, now the outer shell, I wonder. You get very little drone at highway speeds, very very light. Yet the Lt-1 Tips growl gets way nicer :). So I can deal with this pleasant sound while cruising. Hope when I delete my cats this GROWL will remain!(BUT GET LOUDER!!!

Several people on the other forum installed the flowmonster x-pipe in place of the middle resonator and said it cleared a bunch of drone. Plus it gets you a little power. Why would you cut off a resonator and put in a muffler...that's retarded.

Well, the x pipe is the way to go. Reduces resonance and gains power due to increased scavening. What's not to like.

If emissions testing isn't necessary, run straight pipe all the way back. Summit had an off road h-pipe available for something like, $250, that deletes the pre-cats, and the cat in the middle. Have it fitted to the headers.

mat helm
06-24-2010, 02:26 AM
Y'all need ta keep in mind who's in the white house and congress before you start throwing away those cats.:watching:
Plus last time I looked, there's a federal law with a super heftty fine attached to it for altering emission stuff. If they get this cap n trade stuff passed, then they're gonna have lots more of your money to pay people to go out and check these things. I remember back in the 90's when they started sniffing cars here, people lost there jobs because they no longer had a way to work because they couldn't afford to get there car's to pass emissions.:soapbox:
If they start that again, those already valuable cats will at least triple in price.

Ohhh... you mean the headers.. Sorry no, their not here yet. But have the exhaust dropped, a long with the right cat. Spent last nite changing out the u joints on the drive shaft. I will hopfully be ready for them when they get here ( they were sent USPS ).

I removed my precats and installed a high flow main cat on mine whlie retaining the stock mufflers. I did notice a difference in the sound level. I liked the way it sounded so I cut the tips off the stock mufflers and welded on LT1 style tips which fit underneath the rear bumper like the way it should have from the factory. Mine is an 1987 by the way and is emissions exempt, but if I ever need to have it done, I am covered. The new tips also gave it a slightly deeper tone. Hard to tell if a gained any H.P out of it with out a dyno, but it sure feels like it

Not yet, the headers arrived today and look really cool. But I'm still on the back of the car, finishing up the u joints on the half shafts. Then crack in the floor, then headers, shift kit, x brace then... aahhh... *sigh*... next weekend would be nice, but it's 2am and still 83 out....

I just deleted the resonator and went with single chamber flowmasters. They are the little 8-9 inch race mufflers. It sounds awesome but it has a bad Drone? or resonance driving around town. I just bought my 96 Lt4 for track days at VIR, so I will leave it the way it is. But, it is fairly loud inside the car.

This thread was talking about the resonator, not the cats. But yes, removing the cats would cause it not to pass inspection, at least not a visual inspection. I don't think any state is sniffing exhaust anymore, and the C4 doesn't have a tattle tell O2 sensor so no codes to worry about. So you can punch them out and you should be fine.

I have the X-pipe system in and find when idling, the one tail side blows much harder than the other? Is this only because the X pipe causes the fumes to take the easier path?

If your cats are still intact, I'm gonna say one of them is more clogged than the other. Something is clogging up one side.

No Cats,
long tube headers straight out and only mufflers at the rear tail pipes.
But this is actually worrying me because when idling the right side blows much harder than the left and also much warmer??
The car runs, idles nice and no misfires.
The type of exhaust that was installed some time ago, someone told me it works like this when you put foot down, it then blows out equal at the back? I know some BMW's has a system like that.
Is this true or should I look for something else?

Do you have an x-pipe? If not get the engine warm and then drip a few drops of water onto each header where it connects to the block on the left side to see if you have a cold cylinder.

Yes I have an X-pipe.
Is this how it functions or could I still have a cold cylinder?
On idling the right side blows much harder when I put my hand there?

That their either running lean (relative to the other 6) or not firing at all.

But if like you say some cylinders not firing, surely I would feel that or the engine will run uneven?
Because the L98 injectors activate one bank simultaneously and then the other bank, could this perhaps point to one or more faulty injectors?
Are they connected in parallal and one faulty one can cause the other to be not so efficient?
I am still confused?

Injectorplus would be the one to ask. I was speaking in general theory, but yes I'm sure you would feel it if they weren't firing. It could be many other things causing it. A leaking intake gasket, fouled plugs/wires, some sort of build up in the runners, cam/lifter/valve/valve spring... I could go on all day. It maybe just the way it's designed or just normal wear and tear. But if it's running fine, I wouldn't sweat it.
