: FINALLY!!! And a lesson to share....
gwb16 06-11-2010, 06:24 AM After going round and round with a "little" DMV snafu, I have my 84 back on the road!:woowoo:
Dropped it off at the shop yesterday evening for a VA state Inspection, because it had expired while parked!:toocrazy: So anyway, pulled out of my driveway, headed out to the main road and proceeded to accelerate and get through the gears in the pretty much the same fashion as I do in my Cherokee. OOOOOOOOOPS! I was looking at 65 before I even thought about shifting out of 2nd....posted limit is 45. Ahhhh! I love this car! Exhilarating to drive. Makes me feel ALIVE!
Now for the "LESSON"....
robs1988 06-11-2010, 06:28 AM Ahhhh! I love this car! Exhilarating to drive. Makes me feel ALIVE!
Yup yup:thumbsup3:
gwb16 06-11-2010, 06:49 AM I've told a portion of this story once before, so I'll just be extremely brief about the initial portion. I had a 1978 Mustang II that I had done a basic restomod on. The body, interior and paint was damn close to perfect but it didn't have an engine or tranny and had the 6 3/4" rear end in it. So I bought a 302, 330HP, 380ft/lbs of torque (best that I can recall today...in that nieghborhood at least), mated it to a TCI Saturday Night Special C4 reverse valve body tranny, replaced the rear end with a Ford 8" - from another Mustang II and put 4.11 Yukon Gears with the Ford Motorsports posi unit. Car only weighed in at about 2400 lbs and it would BLISTER the tires and pretty much anything that got in my way. So I decided to sell it....time for a new toy, spent 3 years toying with that thing.
Fast forward....found a buyer but he wanted to trade, I listed the thing on CL as willing to trade for an old CJ7 or CJ8, he didn't have an old Jeep but he had the 84 Vette that I currently own. Peaked my interest immensely because I've always wanted a Vette. So I go and take a look, looked like a good deal so we agreed to trade.
NOW it gets interesting! He was the 2nd owner. He bought it from a local guy who was, obviously the original owner. The original owner of the Vette had two 84 Chevrolet 2 door coupes, both Gold, the Vette and a V6 Camaro (bought for his wife). He gave Tony - the guy that I traded with the INCORRECT Title when tony bought the Vette. Tony got the Title for the Camaro. Sooooo, we trade, I march down to DMV, get the car titled in my name, plates on and insured. for reasons which honestly escape me today, I called my insurance company to add the Vette, I was outside on my cell and gave my insurer the VIN number off of the car, reading it through the windshield. Fast forward again about 6 months. I get a letter from DMV, requesting that I provide proof of insurance and I tell them YES I do have insurance. Complete with policy number, my agents name, the whole big picture. They respond that my agent doesn't have ANY record of that the car being insured....based off of the Title and VIN numbers. So I go digging a bit deeper and discovered the VIN's didn't match. INSTANT PANIC sets in....I traded for a stolen car - is what I'm thinking. So I call the VA State Police, they send out an Investigator to my house, he and I tear down half of the car, looking for the hidden VINS, block number, tranny and rear end numbers. Everything matches, clean history, never reported stolen. That's when it was discovered that the original owner had TWO GOLD Chevy 2 door coupes. VA Titles, in this case, didn't specify Corvette or Camaro, so the dude gave Tony the wrong title from the get go and it got passed on to me.
Here's my lesson and I KNEW better than to do this but I was in a hurry, trying to get things swapped over so that I could get back to work. I never bounced the VIN# on the paper title to what was physically on the car. If I had done this, it wouldn't of been my headache, I wouldn't of traded until that was sorted out.
So, $135 dollars and 6 months later DMV "resolved" the issue. I can't even begin to describe how assinine the entire process was. The most difficult part was finding ANYONE at the DMV that knew how to handle it. I got kicked around from department to department for about 3 months before I finally stumbled across someone who knew what she was doing or had to do!
Just my friendly PSA.....double check the VIN#'s BEFORE signing ANYTHING!!!!
Good ending though, I'm back in the seat again, enjoying MY Vette, and NO - I don't care that it's the CFI...it's my FIRST VETTE and I wouldn't trade it for anything!:soapbox:
robs1988 06-11-2010, 07:10 AM Seems to be a recurring theme with government agencies; the left hand never knows, and doesn't care what the right hand does, and vice verse.
Glad I don't have to, but since I live on the state line between Kansas, and Missouri, I hear all the time about the state inspections, and how crooked they are.
My girlfriends, father has a '96 Cherokee that was inspected on Tuesday; they won't pass him citing he needs almost $1k in repairs to be legal, most of it exhaust work. I looked under it the other day, and there isn't anything, or any 'rust holes' that the inspection station claims, anywhere in the exhaust. The station claimed 'rust holes' the entire length of the exhaust system from the manifold on back. Of course, the inspection station will gladly repair it and pass him afterward. He's going to take it to another inspection station next week and see what they say, without telling them what the first station reported. What a rip!!
Oh, and if he fixes it there, they'll waive the $12 inspection fee.:toilet:

This just reminded me of a situation I found myself in at a local Ford Dealership. I bought my wife a 2008 Limited Expedition, it was new, 32 miles on it when we bought it. Well, we've had a series of sensors and switches that have continuosly gone bad over the last 6 months, hard shifts, just a major PITA. Been going round and round with the service department for a good spell now, I think they hate it when they see me drive up....so I was back in the shop 9 days AFTER my last visit. I wasn't happy, check that - I was VERY PI$$ED! Had to take some time off of work to take it back over there, so I told him that he needed to provide me a rental - NOW - so I could go back to work. I have the extended warranty but it doesn't provide for a rental until you hit the 24 hour mark. My reasoning was - I was spending WAY too much time chasing gremlins in a truck that didn't even have 36K miles on it yet - so suit me up in a rental NOW. Unreasonable? Maybe...but I thought not at the time. So my service adviser told me he had to discuss it with his manager, so I waited.
Well he gave this lady after me this BS line about putting a "fresh charge" in her AC system and that would "fix her right up", for a mere $159.99. Her system was DOA - no cooling at all, she was stammering and stuttering, wondering if that would FIX it, he said "Sure we do that all of the time"....so I blurted out..."IT WON'T", she wheeled around, looked at me and asked why, so I explained to her that her AC system was a closed loop system that never needed to be "recharged" UNLESS it was leaking. I told her that what they needed to do was to perform a leak test, repair or replace then RECHARGE and then she'd be good to go. the look on the service advisers was face was FUGGING PRICELESS....he was SUPAPISSED! Anyway, he agreed to troubleshoot the system, repair for cost + labor and charge the system "for free", she agreed and he looked right at me and said "let's get your rental"...he NEVER got his manager involved - LOL! I hate being a dick but can easily be when needed.
FWIW, it may very well be my last Ford, customer service has disappeared. Really wishing that I had bought the Suburban now...hindsight...what can you do? My 99 Expedition was incredible, never had a minute of trouble with it...that's why we went with the 08!
I trust my mechanic whole heartedly, stand up guy that I have known for YEARS. No BS in his corner. Wish that he could do the warranty work on my Expy, I'd never go back to the Ford Service Dept.
mat helm 06-11-2010, 12:16 PM You'll find the same at all stealerships....

Their parts dept ain't no better either. I ordered some convertible parts for my '96 gt vert awhile back; parts guy can't interpret Fords picture diagrams of the top.
slrvette 06-11-2010, 12:53 PM The good news is it wasn't stolen!..:thumbsup3:
todd_vette 06-11-2010, 02:19 PM I use to have an 81 NASCAR pace-car Trans-am that i bought through a theft recovery...Some-one along the line changed the engine code from an 8 to a B on the title...after several years of trying to get that fixed i gave-up and sold it to a local dealer who never did retitle it...he just keeps dealer plates on it when he drives it. Our stupid state wanted me to buy a $25,000.00 bond to meet their requirements to change the title back to correct. Remember the only discrepency was the engine code number...There NEVER was one with a B. :1sm258fight::wtf::catfight:

Now you know what all the fuss on my Facebook Wall was all about. One of the most nerve racking experiences of my life. I agree....at least it wasn't stolen but for about 24 hours I was one sick puppy!

Geez...were you dealing with DMV agents in Richmond, VA also? LOL! That's crazy. Ifeel fortunate!
Chillin96CE 06-12-2010, 04:58 AM This guy you got the Vette from-was he any relation to Hokies? rofl

LOL! You know, I hadn't given that any thought! But you may be on to something here!
This guy didn't claim to be an L98 Guru though and the only Big Block he had was the 502 that he had in Chevy Vega Wagon that he used at the track.:burnout:
robs1988 06-12-2010, 07:40 AM L98 Guru
+ hokies = RETARD!!
todd_vette 06-12-2010, 01:32 PM Geez...were you dealing with DMV agents in Richmond, VA also? LOL! That's crazy. Ifeel fortunate!
No, VA was no part of it. CO was primary aggressor and AZ helped make it harder. I bought it from an empire fire and marine insurance out of AZ and they were the ones who "accidentally" changed the 8 to a B.
I was trying to reinforce ALWAYS watch those VINs carefully...The sad part was that i checked it before taking the car then didn't notice that the change occurred after getting the insurance release statement and title back that it had changed...They look so close that i miss-read it a couple of time untill our (CO) DMV noticed a discrepancy in the newer paper-work. The idiot insurance company fought me tooth and nail and refused to fix the problem from their end (when i could actually get some-one on the phone) and left me hanging. I did get vengeance on them a couple of years later but that is a different story and lesson.
marksvette 06-14-2010, 07:31 AM Wow, that sounds like a nightmare.
Oh and also, its not just Ford dealerships. You go to any dealership including Chevy and you will get the same bullshit run arounds. All they are there for is to make some money. Unless you have a warranty or you are a personal friend with the service guys, never ever take your car to a dealership to be fixed.

Because of all of the EXTRA bells and whistles on the Expedition, I bought the 7 year 100K mile warranty, but they still act like I'm being an inconveinence to them. I suspect or at least HOPE that I may of squelched that attitude. I spoke to the Regional Service Manager a few weeks ago and he was less than happy with the story that I told. I'm thinking about taking it to a different dealership for service or the next issue, which at this point I'm pretty certain isn't too far off. Or, of course I could continue to go there and act like a :tool: for the way they have treated me previously. After I blew up on the Regional Rep, he sent me a coupon book for a dozen free oil changes - LOL! Not much but at least it was a peace offering of sorts. He also assured me that I would be met with a "more willing to help" attitude.:nopity::spank:
