: Hood Different Shade
scarboroughchris 04-24-2010, 09:19 AM I have reciently noticed that my hood is a different shade to the rest of my car, slight difference, but different. I have a 1987 Convertible, Dark Red Metalic. A couple of guys told me that my hood has been re- painted, an other guy from a body shop said the hoods were painted at a different locations, than the rest of the cars, when the cars were built, that is why you see a shade difference. Does anyone know the truth ? ,please tell me that he is right, I hate to think there my be somthing fishy, and the owner hid somthing from me .
robs1988 04-24-2010, 11:22 AM I would agree with the 'repainted' notion over the painting the hood elsewhere suggestion; if the color difference is very obvious then probably. I've never heard of that before; painting it at another location, but maybe. I thought it was all done at Bowling Green plant. Someone else may know.
Your sure your seeing things right? I can look at cars that have not been repainted and depending on the angle and lighting, sometimes panels do look different than others.
scarboroughchris 04-24-2010, 12:47 PM Yep , it is a different shade, more then one person has told me
jimmymack 04-24-2010, 01:33 PM Body shops have a "Paint Meter" which can tell them factory from re-paint..............depth,etc..................drop by one and ask him to use the meter and it will be obvious if it is a repaint..........just a thought:beerbang:
Mr. Hyde 04-24-2010, 04:41 PM A body shop owner that I trust once told me and she was reffering to the Vette, that GM painted the parts in different locations, hence the different shades.
However, in my C6 launch book, it clearly states that starting with the C6, GM began painting the car "all at once in the same location".
However again...the top of my car is noticeably a different shade than the rest of the car and yep..I bought her brand new off the showroom floor.

That gauge will not work on fiberglass. It is magnetic to tell the depth to metal.
I saw a video on the building of a ZR-1 from around 1990 and it was all painted at once...not sure if ZR-1 might have been treated different though???

scarboroughchris 04-25-2010, 06:21 AM Thanks Guys, for all the input, I am glad to hear your view on it ,Mr .Hyde, hopefully it is true that they were painted at a different location. When I had it appraised, two months ago, the guy went over the car with a fine tooth comb, and said it all looked origional, could not see any evidence of damage whatsoever. He claims when a car has been worked on you can allways see some evidence of damage, hope he is as good as he claims. Thanks guys ,First time Vette owner, and lovin it . Chris:woowoo::thumbsup3:

It is actually called a paint depth guage. All it is is a magnet that has calibrated scale on the side to measure the amount of pull force required to remove it from a panel...I have one. The amount of force required to pull it free decreases as the thickness of paint (and other surface materials) increases. That will tell you the mill thickness on the panel...if the panel is made of metal.
Hence, it doesn't work on Corvettes.
86Toad 04-28-2010, 02:54 AM I would be thinking accident, hopefully not though.
