I picked up my heads yesterday from the machinest. As some of you know I had a set of Patriot Freedoms that were bare sitting in the garage. I had him put in the valves, springs, guides, etc. They are set up for .600 lift and I think the spring pressure is set for 107 lbs. My total lift with the new cam i just put in will be .512. He did a nice job on them. I will say for the amount of money I've got invested I feel they are fine. I do believe that this combo is gonna work nice with that HSR.

Here's my questions

1) Do I use any gasket sealer or just put the gaskets on dry and install the heads? I'm using Felpro 1003 gaskets

2)Stupid me didn't realize that they're were 3 different size heads bolts used. In the head bolt kit there are two seperate bolts about 3 inches long. Can anyone provide me exactly which holes to use those in?

3)I've read and heard different tq specs for the heads. Anything from 65 ft/lbs to 80 ft/lbs. What do you guys think?

Use copper spray.

I have some on the shelf if you want to swing by next time you go to NYC.

That's it. Coat each side of the head gasket with that.

Now, some people will tell you it's not necessary, including felpro, but I've been doing this forever and never lost a head gasket.

As to the bolt lengths, I'm having a hard time remembering. Just drop the short ones in the hole see if they catch, if they don't, use the long one.

I like Cometic gaskets better than felpro.. just sayin'...

Go with the recommendations of ARP on the torque spec.

What I did when I was trying to remember is to put them all in the head (while sitting on the workbench) and make sure the bolts are all sticking out the same amount. I think the middle length ones go on the very ends of the heads.

I ve got patriot freedom 195 s on my stroker motor, they perform very well, and my cam is much larger. you should be pleased with the result. felpro says dry

Ed I've used those gaskets both dry and with the copper spray that Injectors plus has used, both having the same results no leaks. So I would suggest whichever you feel at peace with.

Right, personal choice

I err on the side of caution, for no good reason.

I am a fan of installing them dry. In my day job, I deal with product incompatibilities daily. I hate to add something that could be counterproductive.
My experiences with Fel-Pro gaskets installed out of the wrapper is 100% failure free. Knock on wood.

The medium length bolts go on the ends of the middle row.
Permatex Liquid Teflon on the threads, and a thin smear of ARP assembly lube under the head of the bolt are my favorites when it is time to torque them down.

60 ft lbs on the short bolts
65 ft lbs on the medium and long bolts

the two medium length bolts go in the very end holes under the valve covers, the shortest in the row below the spark plugs, the longest bolts in line with the rocker studs, except at the very ends.

I never use a sealant on those gaskets, I, too never had one leak. Use a sealant on the threads of all the head bolts. I LIKE PERMATEX NO. 2 ON THE THREADS,

Race on!!!

That was what I was thinking. Btw Ed, hopefully we will have some vids of my vette this weekend, I have the motor and transmission finished and they just need to be put back into the car. Should be running by Sunday.

I haven't touched my car this week! I don't have much more to do, just set the distributor, hook up the wires, and put in sparkplugs and I'm done. Just finding the time....where does it come from?

If I could find time, mine would have been done 2 weeks ago. When I put all of the time together that it has taken to do the work so far. It has taken only 4 days to pull the motor and trans, swap the cam, and rebuild the transmission. And that is considering I only worked on the car about an average of 6 hours each of those days.

I just make time. It would have been done last weekend except for the delay with the springs for the head.
Today I should have it mostly together, but I have to roll on the new bedliner in the truck first.
Got home 2 am this morning from the city.
It does help that I own my own business as well and now since I work out of a new garage I put up this past December its amazing how much more I can get done in a short amount of time.

BTW JRD... looking forward to seeing those vids!

Yeah, owning your own business does help. I am the only network engineer left at the company I work for due to downsizing, and I report directly to the owner of the company. He just about has a heart attack any time I take a few days off. Mostly because he is also a tech and he has to do my job while I'm gone. Thus is the reason that I never get anything done during the week.

See thats where I got the advantage. I can go to one garage and get some work going for my customers then jump to the other garage and work on something else. But always get sidetracked to the vette...lol

I'm hoping to get all that done today and then by the time my wife gets home I'd like to put a new muffler on her expedition. Shes been waiting for me for months to put one on. Finally ordered one on Wednesday. So I gotta stop by napa to pick it up.

LOL... not yesterday I wasn't. Truck liner took longer than I thought!... Heads are on... but the beer took over last night. so I figured it was in my best interest to stop working on the car. I'll make up for it today.
