My 1984 steering column is loose at the dash. The tilt works fine but I can move my steering wheel from lower left to upper right. Is this a loose bolt or upper steering column bearing problem? My repair manual does not cover this. Can I access the problem area without pulling the steering wheel? I lowered the steering column inside the car and a black solid cylindrical sleeve covers the problem area.

Mine does the same a bit. The pivot pin for the tilt mechanism has likely ovaled out the hole in the cast aluminum column knuckle. There's a guy who sells an over-sized pin (see if I can dig up the link) that helps the matter some. Of course replacing the knuckle and pins would return it to factory original... To get to it you really have to pull the wheel and disassemble a lot of the turn signal mechanism and the like.
It's one of those things on my project list to address.

Is the electronics inside the steering column a problem to get re-assembled and functioning well after replacing steering wheel? I have never had a steering wheel off any model that has tilt, retracting wheel, and all the stuff my Vette has on column.

I haven't torn mine apart yet, and not really looking forward to it. Lots of little parts.
Here's a link to another forum (sorry), but it has a lot of pictures of a '92 being torn down.

Thanks for the link. My 1984 does not have an air bag, so removal of the steering wheel is not as complicated as your 1992. I still don't know if I want to tackle removing the turn signal, emergency flasher and ignition key lock in addition to horn button and steering wheel. If anyone out there knows an easy way to replace a C4 tilt pin, please let me know. Is there any way to removed the lower plastic cylindrical housing right at the dash so I can access the tilt steering area?

http://domesticmisfits.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=124 fyi...the steering wheel is not a grap bar to help you get in or out of your c4's...use the outside door sill to push yourself up & out... or the column will have to be rebuild & this link & many others show its no piece of cake....o'well I got a sloppy column too...whatever...lol:doh:
