: Rear Speakers
USNChief 03-23-2010, 03:11 PM I'm looking to change the speakers I currently have. They are these big monster things made by MTX. They take up to much space and really are not designed for this type of vehicle. Oh, these were in the car when I bought it. I'm thinking of using 6 1/2 speakers in the back and maybe a sub woofer. What do you have and what kind of set up. If you have pics, that would be great!
USNChief 03-26-2010, 01:18 PM A friend sent me this link. I may go with this idea. http://members.***.net/~mfouchi/vette/speakers/boxplans.htm

Chief, here is what I had put on another thread:
Not sure what the space difference is between the 78-82 series and my '73 but sounds/looks similar. I bought and installed a Sound Ordinance B-8pt powered subwoofer. It sits on the deck behind the seats and can fit under or over the t tops when they are stored. It is free standing but is heavy enough and comes with velcro type strips to keep in place on the carpet. The sound is awesome, more than enough bass for the small interior space of a Vette (when added to non amp mid and high range speakers). The above setup looks nice but the installation and cost is MUCH easier the way I went. Crutchfield includes the wiring kit and free shipping with the subwoofer purchase price of $199.00.
I will get some pic's ASAP but won't be until at least Monday. I saw your later post but couldn't open it?! Anyway, it may be the same box I've seen lately that installs over the battery and requires replacing your storage compartments?
USNChief 03-28-2010, 12:19 PM Thanks! I look forward to the pics! :D
y2kfrc 03-28-2010, 05:25 PM Hey Chief,
My rear "speakers" are made by Flowmaster! lol

those are nice looking units, what are they made out of and do you make them yourself? Do the T tops still fit?
2_Late_I_Won 04-06-2010, 09:53 PM No I am going to make mine though that look similar to these. Here is the web sight I found them on.

Sorry it took so long but here is a pic of the speaker setup. The subwoofer is in the middle flanked by the t top covers.

Looks good buster! I made some corner boxes for mine. I went with JBL 6 1/2 in the corners. They sound good but I think I may need the sub woofer. I, at least, achieved my goal. I have more space in the rear. I'll post some pic's when I can.
'Nugz 77 05-23-2010, 02:42 PM I just finished making my own enclosure and installing the speakers last weekend... I will try to get some pics up here soon.
I have a '77 and just made a square box out of 3/4" MDF. My carpentry skills are horrendous, but i think the dimensions were 36"W x 15"H x 7"D. I haven't seen if the T-tops will fit yet, but I'm pretty sure they will. I also covered the box w/ vinyl from a fabrics store using a spray adhesive. The setup is 1 12" subwoofer and 2 6" speakers powered from a 4 channel 1600W amp that I have bridge to 3 channels. I also removed the "shelves" of the 3 door rear compartment and put the amplifier back there, so it is out of sight, as well as all the wires.
All in all, the MDF was ~$35, throw in another $20 for screws and glue, and another $10 for the vinyl, and w/ a little determination you can get a pretty decent box for well under $100.
Okie81 09-13-2010, 11:44 AM Here ya go. 2 6x9's one 6 inch sub, 240Watt amp inside enclosure and tops fit perfectly underneath.

If I did yours, then you would miss the joy of doing something on your own! I hate to deprive a man of that satisfaction.:patriot: But thanks for the compliments. It was actually the first thing I did after I bought the car. I am a tunes guy, I gotta have my music in the car, usually I plug my MP3 player into the head unit. I have straight dual 2.5 inch pipes with chambers and headers, no cats, I can still hear the music even with the tops off, it is nice!
lawrence 10-07-2010, 03:55 PM well done
Okie81 10-08-2010, 07:27 AM well done
Thanx Brother!
JOSE'S 79 10-09-2010, 07:50 AM AWESOME Okie. how did you come up with the curve that it sits on? can you give me some measurement? i wanted to get a speaker box, but then the t-tops wont fit. you solved both issues. speakers and how to fit the tops inside.
Okie81 10-10-2010, 01:06 PM Well I measured across the top for the top measurement since it is straight across. I then cut the first piece that will be the front piece with no curves(rectangular). Then I took cardboard and marked it an trimmed until I had the pattern, I then transfererred that pattern to each end of the front piece and cut it with a jigsaw. I boxed the top and the bottom, the sides and back are open, except where the sub speaker is. I mounted the speakers and it worked fine. As you can see if you go no further down then the level where the strap attaches the tops will slide right in under the box, I do that all of the time. I covered it with marine grade vinyl after I cut the holes for the speakers. It actually slides in and out and is not permenantly mounted, it has to go in at an angle on one side first then the other so it holds intself in the car perfectly and can not move unless I want it too. I measured the inside of the box and hunted around on line and found an amp that would fit and mounted it longetudinally inside the box as well for a sub amp. The 6 inch sub speaker is a marginal performer, but does exactly what I wanted it to do. It only took me about an afternoon to build it in my garage. I hope that helps.
SUPERSIZED** 10-16-2010, 08:00 AM Okie, did you replace the dash speakers and how about an amp?
Okie81 10-17-2010, 10:14 AM I put an amp inside the box. The front speakers were already replaced before I got it, and they sound fairly good.
