a 160 thermostat is not going to make your car run cooler, it only sets the minimum temp not the maximum.your cooling system determines that. you can reprogram your fans to come on sooner, that will bring it down.

Does anyone know what the unregulated no load operating
temperature without a thermostat would be?

It is funny how so many people think that it will make their cars run cooler.

because they mistakenly think its like a thermostat in their home, set at 72 degrees and it stays at 72 degrees. Thats not how it works, it only sets minimum temp, does not control maximum temp at all

because thats what your cooling system is capable of. if you had a 180 it would still run at 190. it will not run at 160 just because you have a 160 stat, unless you improve your cooling to hold it there,. just like if you could get 90 degree stat, it would still reach 190. reprogram the fans to come on earlier PROBLEM SOLVED

Why do you want a different t-stat other than stock?

So many guys have a understanding of the cooling system on a car all out of whack. That's why I always ask a guy why he wants to change a t-stat from stock temps to lower temps. It lets me know if they understand what they are doing as compared to what they are trying to do.

I agree, most think the temp of stat is where the car will operate all the time, but nothing could be further from reality. it only establishes minimum temp, has no control over maximum temp at all.

I agree. It's unusual how something so simple can be so misunderstood.

Hey Blue Collar, I'm over here getting ready for a season of traveling around the country, showing guys how to care for their paint. It looks like it's going to be an exciting season! :thumbsup3:

If you're running 230-240 you have more problems than a T-stat. If a T-stat cured it, it was probably because your original one was stuck partially closed to start with.

I'm not a fan of 160s.

My t-stat went south and my temps red lined. After replacing it with a stock one, every thing went normal again.

Good idea. If your engine is stock, you should replace parts on it that are of the same specs. There's nothing wrong with better quality parts, but when you change the specs, you affect other areas of the engine that people never take into consideration when doing so. That totally defeats all of the engineering that went into your engine..

im gonna take the t-stat completly out and let it flow free, just gonna use water to and no antifreeze...

you will most likely overheat in hot weather by doing that. the stat needs to be in the flow to restrict it some, otherwise you get a situation where the coolant passes so quickly thru motor , it doesn t absorb enough heat transfer. and straight water is also going to boil at lower temp than 50/50, and provides no lubrication for pump or corrosion resistance.

i wanna thank everyone for their posts but there is no "real" issue with my car. i work with a bunch of hardcore Ford guys and they say ford people are more helpful and dont do alot of trash talking. the 160 t-stat was just a starting point for a conversation. i bet them i would trade in my vette for a mustang if they were wrong. i would have to say it was about a tie cause we could tell on both sides that there was a little trash talking going on and some not so helpful advice, but its kool, at least i get to keep my vette,,,,for now.

you know, most of the people on here legitimately want to help other Corvette owners with issues that are "REAL". For you to use a scam scenario to provoke a response to satisfy your immature Ford buddies is childish to say the least and a big f**king waste of everyone s time who was trying to HELP !

:tool: If you ever get into a situation where the temp is about 200 turn on the ac which automatically turns on both fan's, bringing the temp back down to 190.
