Whats your opinion on 'Take off' for a 1/4 mile race.

Do you, rev the engine 3000 rpm and let the clutch out?

Do you dance on the throttle between 1500 and 2000 rpm?

Do you want the tires to bark a little or not?

When shifting gears, do you release the throttle or hold it down?

Oh, I just read your last sentence! Well, seeing that I'm here, I have always put it at 2500 and drop it. I am not really good just because my reaction time is always slow! But I have fun and that's all that matters to me.

Can't help you there. Mine's an automatic.

No one rule for this. Factors like track prep, temperature, type tires and even tire pressure plus a lot of other variables make a huge difference. You can launch anywhere from about 2500 rpm to 4000. Shifts with your foot flat on the pedal are not a good idea. You really just need to get out there and make some runs.

You want to come off the line with as much power as you can JUST SHORT of spinning the tires. Most people launch around 4000-5000 rpm and ride the clutch (burning it) until the car is under way. You let off the throttle when you're shifting, then floor it again. The only way you can ever know what's the best technique for your car is to practice practice practice. Most drag races are won (or lost) at the starting line, so the technique used for launching is the most important part of the race.

Thanks fellows, ive never lost a road race yet at the guestimated 1/4 mile, i have always danced the throttle around 1500-2000 and then barked the clutch, not too much tire spin and i'm up and running whilst the challenger is reving high and burning rubber, smoked more powerful cars on the highway.

Ok, one more question.
On the HONK, HONK, HONK?
Does one lauch on
HONK HONK GO? OR
HONK, HONK ,HONK GO?

Do i release the clutch on the 3rd honk or after the 3rd honk??

go on three. Honk honk go but if you going from a dig were you would be reving to launch most of the time thier is a flag man and you going off an arm drop. The only time i have gone from honks is a roll race in that case i put the car in the gear that puts me in my torque rang best. 25 mph roll=1st gear and easy on the gas, 40 mph roll= 2nd gear easy on gas with spray. and 60mph roll= is 3rd gear

I have always favored doing rolling starts from about 20 mph and then shutting down at about 70-80 mph. It isn't nearly as hard on the car as standing starts are, and the top end speeds aren't too excessive. And when I'm testing a new component, I always do 3rd gear 60 mph starts and then go up to 100 mph; timing it with a hand held stopwatch. As there's no tire burning or shifting involved, a stopwatch alone will easily reveal the success of the modification.

What did you launch at in your avatar pic? If you know.

Mine is an automatic. I footbrake it at 1200 rpm, but then I have the stock convertor.

Mines auto as well. I don't rev at the line though. The one time I did I must have over revved cause the car got a bit squirrly on me!

For me I usually manual shift the car off the line. No revs just wait for the third amber light. Of course I don't race to race.. The wife and I go for a full day of test and tune. Nothing like being lined up with a 8 second car!..

So if a chanllenger sayes, lets run em, should i advise a rolling side by side start at say 20 mph.
I always come to a complete stop. I'm talking highway runs not track, you know the local smartie wants to whip on the vette, type thing.
Who does the honking??

This is some good info, I would love to someday take my Vette to the track and give it a whirl and it's nice to atleast have an idea of what to do!
