Whats a good pad for replacement on a 1989? Also do I need to re-surface the rotors or can I just put the pads on? How do you know when the rotors need to be replaced or re-surfaced?

By right whenever you do a brake job you should do a complete job. This means new pads, inspection of calipers and replacement of any seals, replacement of guide pins, machining of (or replacement of) rotors and bleeding of the system. This is also a great time to repack wheel bearings.

Lots of people will skip over some important steps. Truth be told I've just replaced pads and buttoned her back up myself. Especially if I know the car is a short timer.

But if you are really concerned about stopping you will take the time to do it right.

I don't know a whole lot about these cars just yet, but my dad had the brakes redone for me and they put on some Hawk pads and they did redo the rotors also because they look brand new!!:)
