Hello fellow vetteheads :woowoo:

Since November 2009 I've been restoring, repairing and modifying my 76 vette. I finally got to do some fun work, that is horsepower!! I'm running the stock 350 that had good compression numbers 150-155 on all cylinders and I installed a Comp Cam Thumpr 279h hydraulic flat tappet cam and lifter kit along with new pushrods, roller tip rockers, dbl roller timing chain, timing cover, high flow water pump, electric fan plus a set of Edelbrock E-Street aluminum heads (#5089) and used my existing hooker headers, edelbrock eps intake, Mallory HEI and Holley 600 dbl pumper. Here is a video I put on youtube if anyone else is thinking of doing some work like this you can check it out before you decide.

Thanks guys, I'm still playing around with timing and advance along with the carb, it just isn't revving the way I think it should under load so I ordered a Holley 770 carb to try, I'll let you know if it does the trick or not.

Set the timing so you get 36* at 3000 RPM. email this guy-- v8fastcars@msn.net and ask him to send you the current copy of his timing paper. He's got the combinations of weights, springs, vacuum advance cans all worked out for both point and HEI distributors.

What carb are you running now? it could be as simple as a late pump shot, jets too small, or a list of other things.

If you're running a carb that has a lower CFM rating the low end (off-idle) will be pretty snappy, but it'll run out of air. Too big and the low end will be sloppy but it'll come alive at upper RPM. Same with mechanical or vacuum secondaries- Vacuum and a manual trans will work, but it takes a whole bunch of fine tuning to get any holes out of the acceleration curve. same with mechanical secondaries and an auto trans.

some other things to consider: is the gearing / converter matched to the cam ? an 'under stalled' car with not enough gear will also feel sluggish till you get into the powerband. also try one silver / one blue spring on the advance weights. sometimes you gotta play around to get it right--good luck ! as for the 770 carb, hope it rips......but i think its too big. better off with a 600-650 cfm unit, with vacuum secondary if you got automatic trans.

I agree the 770 cfm is too much carb.for your combination, its gonna hurt low end performance.

A 600 cfm carb is perfect as a 350" engine running at 90% VE can only swallow 550 cfm at 6000 rpm. To go to a larger cfm carb would be a mistake.
