Why does a car back fire? I have a '84 with almost 100,000 miles on it? Does this mean the exhaust is bad or motor problems? Some times the back fire isn't really noticable then other times I get some loud ones and it becomes annoying.

If it has orig. iginition system (coil, rotor, cap, plugs, wires, etc)w/100k and 24 yrs old I would just replace all as its cheap money, easy to do. To be Sure, drive to Autozone or the likes thereof and they will test for free, then I myself would install quality replacement parts, Autozone is good for somethings but not these. And it probably wont't cost much more if any. Sorry Autozone, but the voice of experience speaks.

Yeah I hate to say but I agree with you. Napa has better parts or go to performance shop for recommended OEM replacements.
