Has anyone else done the whole clay bar deal and feel its a waste of time? I've tried the Meguiars clay bar kit, spent nearly 4 hours doing the car and didn't notice a difference from when I just used regular wax? So many people swear by this and personally I would like to know what the trick or deal is? Feel free to post comments on proper way to clay bar or if you feel the same as I do.

Hi Jack,
I understand where you are coming from and it really comes down to how the car was maintained before claying. If the car is properly maintained often, driven only in nice conditions, and garaged/covered regularly, you may not see a significant difference after claying. The best way to tell if your vehicle needs to be clayed is to do the "sandwich bag" test. Open a clean sandwich bag and place your hand inside of it. Gently set the bag on the surface of your vehicle and while keeping the bag still, slowly work your finger tips over the paint. If you feel little bumps or imperfections, then you will need to clay. If the paint feels smooth, skip claying. The reasoning behind the sandwich bag test is that it magnifies your ability to feel the bumps and imperfections.
Once you have finished claying, you want to be sure to polish the paint and apply a protective layer wax.
For more information on claying your vehicle, please check out these videos:

I hope this helps Jack. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions!
Thanks,
-Dale

If you have comtaminants on your paint you will be amazed with how easy claying will get them off. If your paint is clean you will just be wasting your time.

I never use clay bars on my garage queens as I find it way too risky with the possibility of scratching your car even with proper lube, etc. I think the PC with a good polish on a orange or white pad would get rid of same what clay would do. I dont bother using that sandwich bag gimmick either...I think thats a marketing gimmick to sell more clay bars. If it feels smooth with my hand, that's good enough for me. Never seen a show car judge with a sandwich bag in his hand patting down show cars! It should not take more than an hour claying any car even with great caution.

Want clean paint??? And the best shine that last for months??? Try Klasse from Herringtons catalog. A few coats of this and you will throw out all your waxes and cleaners. Use Adams detail cleaner when done & will add a nice luster.

Klasse makes a product call All-In-One and a Paint Sealant. I like Klasse All-In-One and it does have some nice cleaning ability. It's an acrylic product that also work good on windows, chrome and some plastic in addition to paint. The paint sealant looks pretty good but is hard to remove. In my opinion there are a lot of products out there that look better on paint and are much easier to apply and remove. There are a lot of contamiates that clay will take off that Klasse AIO will not touch. When needed detailing clay is a great product but it's nothing you will need to use very often.

First time I used the clay bar I got great results from because I did have all sorts of micro debris, I will use clay bar about once a year, the rest of the time its Zaino for my rides.

I bought my vette from Florida and the first time I used the clay bar it made a tremendous difference. I agree with the once a year timeframe!!

Did I read this right? 4 hours claying your car. I clay my whole car in about 30 minutes. If your finish is in pristine shape, you probably don't need to clay. Did you see any contaminants in the claybar after applying it?
Once a year is about right for me also, since my car has fairly low mileage and is garaged when not driven.
