Anyone install headers yourself on a C4? I have a 1988 and was wondering if you might post some tips that will make this easier. Things to watch out for, etc. Does the motor need to be raised? Who makes the best headers for C4's? I know a couple companies that I have heard but notice they advertise for the newer Vettes.

The first question is "do you want to retain your smog equipment"

If not its a lot easier. I recommend the Heddman Elite headers full length(thermal coated) @ $380~440. They have oversized flanges/tubing for alot more durability. Plus the thermal paint helps with underhood temp. This isnt as crucial in the vette as it is on a camaro but why put heat in the engine bay when you dont have too. I have these on my 85. Hooker makes full length headers that have tuner runner lengths for superior torque output though they are very pricey $650~1K depending on options. The only real downside to long tube headers is you have to have your exhaust modifed for the flanges. 9 times out of ten is better to just go ahead and replace the entire exhaust system due to neglect.

Smog legal shorties are little easier hower you already have smog legal shorties on your car! The power gains for the swap are negligable at best. There is a plethora of manufacturers making shorties and they are all comparable in quality as most arent expensive enough to merit any real hardcore engineering. Its about a weekend job and can be frustrating repeatedly attempting install until you find that one method of insertion that works. Considering all the factors the only reason I would do a shortie install is if
1 smog must be retained
2 The smog lines/headers are damaged
3 To get ceramic coating on the exhaust (this can also be applied to the stock headers)

Otherwise save your money for long tubes and full exhaust.

Thanks for the help, I managed to find a used set of Hookers that should be coming in any day now. Who does the thermal paint or is that something you do yourself?
