I travel home on about 30 miles of open highway and my 89 will stop running. I can put it in neutral and it will start again, but will stall again. acts like its not getting fuel and is probably the fuel pump going out. This is happening more frequently. Car does not really sputter much when this happens. The injectors were replaced a few years ago at the dealer. The car has 70k miles. Before I go replaceing parts I would like some input, feedback, sugestions or ideas

Get yourself a fuel pressure gauge, & if poss. tape it to the windsheild so you can see it. You can get the gauge at any auto chain stores.(A-zone, pep boys, ect) Press. should be around 35-40 psi, Check the spec. in a manual. The press. should hold when engine is off.

I agree to replace the fuel filter. Its only 5 to 15 dollars or so. But I have a question. Wouldn't a saturated fuel filter cause it to cut off soon after starting? I have also heard that non vented fuel tanks can cause cars to die in 30 to 70miles.That you have to open your gas cap and close it periodocially to lets the traped air out and fresh air in. I swear GOD I am not making this up no matter how silly it sounds. lol

That definitely reminds me of when my fuel pump went out.

I agree that definetely sounds like a fuel pump problem. But, I always try to rule out the easy/cheap ideas first. I had a very similar problem years ago with a street rod I built running a big block. Turns out the fuel tank vent line was partially obscured when I tie wrapped the rubber line. I was delivering more fuel volume than the vent line could allow air to replace. The engine would stall and die. Drove me nuts. A friend suggested the problem. I diagnosed it by cracking the fuel cap a bit. Ran fine. Replumbed the vent line, problem solved.

Dont forget the fuel pump relay, Its under the hood and has to deal with high temps all the time.

You're onto something David, that is what failed on my baby last year.

The secondary oil pressure switch should keep the fuel pump running if you have Oil pressure.
I'm thinking you should check your Ignition Module. They tend to crap out after they get hot but are fine when cold. Lack of insulating grease between the module and dizzy plate.

Taped gage to winshield, after 3 days of driving finally got it to quit running but gage NEVER droped below 32 psi. it started again service engine light comes on and goes out as car sort of chugs and cuts out (as if starving for fuel) it did this for a few miles then ran fine. when I got home it was idleing at 1600 rpms, it normally idels around 700

Check the egr valve, ohm the injectors both hot & cold, any codes? High idle could be tps or cts. Good luck.
