Is it possible to check the charging system with just a voltmeter? If so how? Is this the best way to test?

Start up the car. Put voltmeter on pos and neg cables. Take reading.Should read 13 + volts.
Take neg or pos off battery while running.(WEAR SAFETY GLASSES) Take reading . If car shuts off, alternator is no good. If checking 13 volts or above, alternator is good. Shut off car. Reconnect battery terminal. Restart car. Remove clip on alternator. If car shuts off sort of quickly, replace battery. The car will run if alternator is good once you get it started. Otherwise replace it, unless you have a short. THAT IS ANOTHER STORY.
