I have a 1989 Corvette with no airbags , I don't think they started putting airbags in till 1990. Well someone just told me I wouldn't pass my emmissions test because there are no airbags. Is this true and what would this mean?

Whoever you've been talking to is full of $hit.Airbags have nothing to do with a car passing a smog test.Just curious, who told you this?

The only way I could possibly see this being an issue is if the car was originally equipped with airbags and they were removed. Or if the car had been wrecked and repaired and they had not been replaced.

One of my Husband's friends told us this tonight, hubby laughed at him, but I became a little worried, I thought he might know what he was talking about somewhat because he used to work at Firestone. He also said if it didn't pass I would have to slap antique plates on it and only be aloud to drive it so many miles per year.

I have heard that CT has some really strict inspection laws, but the air bags would not be an issue for emmissions testing. If it was originaly equipt with air bags (i don't remember for certain right here and now...will have to look it up) then you might have problems with passing a safty inspection depending on local laws, and i doubt that they will issue any kind of plates then. If it didn't come from the factory with air-bags then there is nothing anyone can say.

I don't think your inspection regs are any worse than here in Mass. and when I got my '88 inspected he looked at it, said nice car and slapped on a sticker, no emission test and I've never had air bags questioned in any cars.

12. You may contact the Toll-Free Emissions Test Hotline with any questions, comments or concerns at: 888-828-8399, Monday - Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. or visit the ctemissions.com web site.

I am not in CT so I can't say but I was an E tester in Co when they had it & if it did not come with it, it is not needed. & air bags were not looked at since it was for the sole purpose of emissions. Now if it is a safety inspection, that is a different story & if it is already registered it looks like it is not needed. If any doubts, call the # above, I am certain they can answer that question.

In texas the air bags are not even checked by safety inspections. I used to do inspections 10 years ago while in college but even now my pickup was wrecked when i bought it and I never replaced the air bag. I just cut it out and left the steering wheel alone. I do have a light on the dash that stays on but in the 3 years I've owned the truck, the inspection place has never said anything about it. However to replace 1 liscense plat bulb ( the other was working) cost me 20 bucks (just did it with out asking) last time it was inspected. Maybe you just need to find a shop and call them and ask them your concerns. Its better for them then you bringing it in and then they have to fail you and recieve no money. I fortunate enough to move away from houston whe emission testing kicked in.

Sounds like :kngt: to me as well. I will add that when I had my C4 that when they are 20 years of age you can buy a "collector" license plate - then thereafter you don't have to go through emissions testing. You might want to check it out in your state.

I'm from CT and they stopped inspecting vehicles years ago. Now ever pos with axles falling off and floors rusted out burning more oil than gas is out there running around waiting to drop their bumper on the hood of my vette with not a care in the world.

Emissions into the ozone layer has nothing to do with airbags in the cockpit. It is a test to see how clean your cars exhaust putting out engine gasses in the enviroment. It looks at Hydro carbons ( HC ) , Oxcides of Nitrogen (NOx), Carbon Monoxcide ( CO ).Not air bags and not sillycone bags on a Vegas Escort.
