: Is this a gearshift lever or transmission problem?

I have a 98 vette with an automatic transmission. About a week ago I was running errands around town; four hours tops; stop and go traffic, car on/off at each stop.

On my last errand I started the car and put the gear shift in drive, but the transmission did not engage. With the shift lever button depressed the shift lever could be moved freely through all the gears with no resistance. I didn't even feel the normal engagement of the lever/gear as was being shifted into position.

I was also able move the shift lever into park or drive without depressing the shift lever button, and without using too much pressure I was able to move the lever into the adjacent gear position.

I'm the second owner of this vette and have had it since 2005, it has 62,000 miles on it, its garage kept and on average is only driven around the city and on a 30 mile stretch of highway (65mph zone) about once a month.

I have never notice shifting problems or experienced the tranny hard shifting while driving (not even on the day this happened).

I have never just floored the accelerator from a stop, but I have jumped on it while driving.

I haven't been able to find anyone with a similar problem on any forums and was hoping some of the vette guys/girls on here might be able to offer some advice.

So does this sound like a gearshift lever or tranny problem?

I agree shift cable,I would take it to your garage of choice, put it on a lift and check to see what gives, couldn't be to expensive compared to a tow when it gives up on you.

definitly sounds cable or shifter related. Possibly the spring in the shifter. If youd like have jack the car up and have someone shift the lever and look at the trans for cable movement. Of course this will only work if the problem is occuring :(
