I'm not sure about a '77 (same as '80) but I did that very change a few years ago. I had a 700R4 built and I installed it. Pretty straight forward. The only insight that I can help you with is that the lock switch is wired to the brake light switch. The trans will lock itself up in 4th gear. When the brakes are applied, power from the load side of the brake light switch powers a pull off solnoid inside the trans. That unlocks the torque converter. As for the shifter, all is oem. Only difference is that the 3rd gear position indicator is really 4th, 2nd gear position indicator is really 3rd, and the 1st gear positon indicator keeps the trans in second. There is no 1st gear position or control. But I've never needed to keep it in first except with the throttle. 1982 was the last of the C3 'vettes and it also was the first year of the 700R4. You'd think that there'd be a different shifter setup but I haven't explored that.
