Just thinking and would like to learn how to tune cars? Do you have to go to a mechanic school first or just understanding computers be enough?

Are there any online courses?

Thanks guys

My guess is you would have to go to school and understand the mechanics and why and how an engine works. When tuning you would need this knowledge to program? I could be wrong but I would like to think most tuners had a excellent back ground and understanding of these motors.

If you want to see what's involved check out the HP Tuners (http://www.hptuners.com/forum)forum first. Then decide if you want to pursue this as an occupation. I've personally been looking at the code in the computers since 1989. And it's not getting easier... :D

There are courses available that will teach you the fundamentals. Tuning is easily 75% troubleshooting though.

Cars have come in for a tune with the base timing set wrong, improper firing order, aux. fuel pump wired up to the amp so it would only work if the radio is on, clogged injectors, etc.

You have to be proficient enough to not question yourself and question the setup you're tuning instead. Like mentioned above, if you have a C5/C6 you can start by attempting to tune your own car. You have to know how an engine operates and what it needs and why.

eficalibrator on HPTuner's forum used to work for Chrysler on OEM calibrations and is offering classes here - http://www.hptuners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15647 .

I've talked with him in person at the PRI show (he also works for Mustang Dyno) and he is very knowledgable but can easily be over your head if you don't know the basics to begin with (as is with almost anything).
