: '96 Grand Sport Question

I have been looking at a '96 Grand Sport that the current owner says all it needs is new tires and the fuel injectors cleaned. That's why the owner says it has a rough idle and stumbles on acceleration. The paint and interior are mint and in almost factory new condition, Does it sound correct that the injectors would need cleaning with 29,150 total miles on the LT4 engine? Is there some way I can pull the history of the engine codes from the car?

A Grandsport with less than 30K miles is a rare find. How much is he asking?

Injectors could be the problem, but so could a lot of other things. See the sticky here in the tech section for how to pull codes.

$29,900 for the GS or $31k with new tires. I was going to test drive it today, but the northern Missouri weather is not cooperating with my plans. GREAT LINKS on the diagnostic info - thank you!

rough idle and stumbles on acceleration? Sounds like injectors to me.

Have the seller replace the injectors, then talk price.

There is also a Grand Sport registry and fourm where you might be able to find out more about the car. You'll need the VIN.

Is the owner just guessing that it needs injector servicing or did he take it somewhere and was told this? There's other things that can cause these symptoms also. 29K miles and in need of service or repair is not uncommon for a car that hasn't seen heavy use and sat for long periods of time. Before spending that kind of money, maybe think about getting it checked out so that you aren't hit with any unexpected surprises from a potential less than honest seller. Not a bad price for the GS if the mileage and condition are what you say. Did the owner try running some injector cleaner?

how long was the car sitting for anyway? if it has been sitting for a long
time...want to make sure that there isn't any "gunk" in the fuel.

It's the original owner, so as a one owner GS he is willing to give me all the paperwork including original sales documents. That Grand Sport Registry site is AWESOME - thank you for the info about that link.
He said he's willing to have the injectors cleaned at his expense this week. It also comes with an extra set of NOS Grand Sport floor mats. So, if the weather cooperates and he gets finished with having the injectors cleaned I'm going to make him an offer. I've also found out from the Registry site that only 190 coupes came with the Z51 suspension. He said the car is driven regularly for about 1000 miles a year and stored on blocks normally from December to the end of March.

1100 for new tires seems kinda steep though. Just assume the worst about the problems and price it from there. That way you know your getting a good deal. Also if its what you want and your willing to pay that much then its a good deal for you.

If he has a grand sport which is a collectors car. He would have it fixed so it runs good and he can get top dollar for it! Offer him 20K and if he doesnt like it tell him to fix it and then You will talk about his price!

My '96 collector edition has the LT4 engine; it has 77,000 miles on it and has never needed fuel injector service.
