I am new to this site and this is my first question. My Vette is a 63 coupe, the ameter gage is disconnected and someone has added a volt gage next to the parking brake lever. It looks bad hanging there but I do like the volt gage better than the original ameter gage. Has anyone put a voltmeter gage in the dash where the stock ameter gage should go. Is there a Corvette voltmeter gage that would fit there and look good. Is there a downside to hooking up the original ameter gage, are they prone to some sort of problems I am not aware of. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Dave

Some of the Corvette gauge restorers can convert the battery gauge to a voltmeter, but it'll look a little different.

There's no downside to leaving the original battery gauge as-is; they work fine if you have good connections through the bulkhead connectors on the engine compartment side of the fuse block.

It's not really an "ammeter" - it's a sensitive voltmeter that senses system voltage at the starter battery cable stud and at the screw terminal buss on the horn relay and displays the difference, showing current flow either TO or FROM the battery.

The black wire goes to the battery cable stud on the starter solenoid, and the 18-ga. red wire goes to the screw terminal buss on the horn relay. Both wires go through the inboard multiple connector on the engine side of the fuse block; if those terminals are in good shape, the gauge should work.

Thanks John, your info is a great help to me. I have one more question concerning the ameter gauge. I noticed an "ameter gauge capacitor" for sale while looking at some repo gauges for sale. What does this connect to and is it a stock item or maybe just used with the repo gauges. Thanks again for your help. Dave

All Corvettes originally equipped with a radio had many radio noise suppression capacitors, including one on the ammeter - all of them are shown in the U69 (radio) section of your Assembly Manual.
