Went into my local hardware store for brake fluid (draining brakes until clear) yesterday and told the owner that one of the aluminum wheels was bolted on at 600 ft lbs!!! It was a wonder that the lug bolts did not go through the aluminum wheel and I asked him if one got a flat tire how one would have the strengh to take the lug bolts off. His response, and he was serious, "Well...if one can afford a Corvette than one can afford to call a tow truck to replace the flat tire." Stupid me!:smack: :thud:

thats what i meen. Typcal kid of responce. Is it jelousy or just the ignorance of the masses to think that a vette isnt just like every other car on the road?

That is what the first exhaust place said to me when I reacted the high cost exhaust they where trying to sell me! He replied "you can afford a fancy Corvette so a $1200 exhaust shouldn't be nothing for you" :wtf: ???? Come on its a 1990 with over 100,000 miles that I bought for $19,800 7 years ago! And there is nothing "fancy" about this car on the roof the paint has a little fading action going on, and my driver side seat is all cracked!?
cmcbunch 01-31-2008, 09:55 AM whoah whos telling you to torque your lugs to 600 ft lbs?! Thats waaaay too high. The torque sheet calls for 110-120. The studs would shear with that kind of toque! Btw you ought to talk to some of those fools who buy ferraris/lambos. The only reason to buy a car like that is to attract gold diggers.
1985c4 02-01-2008, 06:06 PM Yeah i get the same thing when i went into a exhuast shop they were trying to get me to spend $1300 on my exhaust i was like wtf am i made of money and they were like with that car i would ahve to say yes...... dumb ***! i was like im in the NAVY i make no money at all dirt broke..... then he looked at me like wow how did you get that car.:wtf: :thud:
khan2305 02-02-2008, 06:49 AM Maybe if you are driving the new ZR1 or a new Z06 because those are expensive IMO. But for the most part if you want a Corvette most people can get one and not spend very much!
shrub 02-02-2008, 07:16 PM I know exactly what you mean, I needed new exhaust not to long ago and the guy I normally use priced himself right out of the work...
But for the Record I work at BorgWarner Torque transfer systems as a quality technician and make about 50k per year.
AZJoeD 02-02-2008, 07:35 PM Yeah, that guy who paid a million bucks for the #1 2009 ZR1 is rich. I guess that must be the point of reference.
I recently came across just the opposite response. I just got my vette back from the shop and being an inquisitive sort of guy I asked the owner why he didn't charge a "special" labor rate for corvettes? His answer floored me. He said " what's so special about your L98 or any other 350, 396 or 427 regardless of what car it's in. And the same goes for the tranny. I work on the guts of the machine regardless of what kind of wrapper it's in." Now, that's the real approach, not to mention the most reasonable. Too many mechs out there charge "special" rates just because its a vette!
belfiglioval 02-03-2008, 05:28 PM hey, i totally agree !! i only make about 35k a year but as far as insurance goes i only pay about $350 a year for exotic car insurance for the vette, my 1970 chevelle is also included as a classic on the policy, if you want more info write me.

Holy crap that's cheap...I pay about 750 per year for the vette alone...
LT1Power 03-26-2008, 09:23 PM Totally get the "you are rich since you drive a vette". This just has to be due to the history of vette and the flashyness of them. Funny story. I bought my '92 for $7400. After talking shop to a few of my friends, i kept getting the comment "wow, i wish i could afford a vette" and when i told them what i got mine for, tadda, they both got one within 2 weeks  Another friend is now looking since he never thought he could get such a fun ride for under 10k.
LT1Power 03-26-2008, 09:26 PM BTW, those two vettes next to my red one in the avatar are the ones that were purchased from my friends. And no, we didn't try to get the red/white/blue :smack:
Since I have 2 vettes a 70 and 2001 everyone thinks I'm loaded. Regardless of the fact that i'm self-employed work 12 hrs a day almost everyday. My friends think I'm a bank and don't hesitate to ask me for a loan. I earned it with long hours, saving money, a broken leg and numerious stitches. I'm a contractor and do about 70k a year.

I get tired of the "They must be loaded" BS also. I work hard for everything I have. I dreamed about having a vette years ago and just kept pushing harder to make that dream a reality. It would have happened sooner but a couple of 4 wheelers, gokart for the kids, horses for kids, and guns for me kept getting in the way. Now that I bought it my wife thinks it is her turn.:thud: BTW I work In the petroleum industry as a warehouse manager, driver and salesman. Self employed on the side with used oilfield pipe sales and welding. Total about 140k last year but self employment taxes hurt like hell. Still trying to convince CPA that my vette is my company car.
XPOSE C5 03-27-2008, 06:13 PM People who think vette owners are rich used or needs drugs
Vette owners don't drive there car daily because they can't afford to fill up there gas tank. The only difference between them and us is, we are Smok'n Vette and they are Smok'n weeds. Mine are just collecting dust.

c4running 03-28-2008, 07:19 AM Yeah, that guy who paid a million bucks for the #1 2009 ZR1 is rich. I guess that must be the point of reference.
Lets not forget he just prior picked up a '53 for more $$!
hollywood 03-28-2008, 10:40 PM Yeah I always get that your loaded crap from people. My buddy tell me you can land that hot chick because you drive a Corvette or you can afford that 400 dollar speeding ticket no problem cause you have the money to buy a Vette.
84vette 03-29-2008, 05:57 PM i work at Little Rock AFB im a crew chief on c-130 my curnt rank is SRA hope i make sgt this year miss it last year buy 3 points :(

Looks great though!
grestmit 04-12-2008, 05:11 PM I had someone say that I must be in money or well off. I asked him how much he paid for his PT Cruiser. He said $16,900 on payments. I said well you could have bought two and had plenty of cash to fix them both up real nice for what I payed for my 89. I bought it for $6,500. The only reason it was so cheap was because he lived way the hell out in the friggin stix. After looking at nine other Vettes the day I decided buy I settled on this one. I was going to pay up to $10,000, But all were well used up. The Vette I got needed miner fixing. Any one can get a Vette if they look hard enough to find a good deal.
Black Label Vette 04-12-2008, 07:21 PM Im a Union elevator service tech in Myrtle Beach, SC.
I work a ton of overtime and I make about 95k. What
kills me is my insurance. I have a 16yr old son who is
driving now!! My insurance is $5400 a year for my vette

FranksVette 04-13-2008, 11:43 AM Hello
The people here in germany say you are so rich because you drive a Corvette. They say the Vette is to thursty.
I answer:You are crazy. My vette has a gas milage from 15 litre in the
city and 10 litre on the Autobahn when I not race.:burnout:
And the parts and so on are cheaper than a Porsche a what ever.
Frank
1988 L98 05-06-2008, 12:20 PM I know what you guys mean, i am in the service and make like 40,000 a year, maybe. People i work with are like, what, that's yours!? yes it's mine. How do you afford that, i tell them you can get anything if you find the right deal. i also have a 1969 ford fairlane, when i tell them that, they just turn around and walk away, LOL!!
Ambalanche 05-06-2008, 02:15 PM Lets not forget he just prior picked up a '53 for more $$!
More power to him!! I have no problem with rich people. I hope to be one some day. I'm not now, I just got a great deal on my car! (Look close, those are cracks in my driveway from my house I bought as a Hurricane Ivan Repo) Like everyone said, if you look hard enough, you can find a good deal. Kinda like the saying, "I'm not a Dr. I just play one on TV." I'm like "I'm not rich, I just look like I am 'cause I drive a 'Vette!"
leafsmainiac 05-06-2008, 06:58 PM When I arrived from Florida with my car my neighbor said "Wow, what happened...did you win the lotto or something?". I guess the fact is that most people do not know how much the cars depreciate. A good deal for us guys that do not like to drop $50k driving out of the dealership. I think that the other theme is to be weary of this and to be careful as to which mechanic works on your toy. Trust is earned!!!!

This guy is the prime example of not to expencive. As an E-4 if he has a wife and kids he will qualify for food stamps. It is a shame we pay our solders and airman so little. If he can afford a Vette just about anyone can.
jimhew 05-08-2008, 02:43 AM The best revenge is living well...personally never apologize for my spending patterns or my toys. Paid my dues as a lot of you gents have.:patriot:
heyunclecharlie 05-22-2008, 07:53 AM I don't think so, just depends on what you are buying. If you are buying like a suped up ZR1 then you are probably going to spend a good little bit, but you can buy a used C4, C5 for relatively low cost!

WOW:eek: That's insane!! I feel for you! You're right though, it's not that the Vette itself is expensive but the insurance companies put it to you!
Spark 05-24-2008, 03:41 AM Yeah well this kind of deal is the same thing with jewelry. People see things like expensive cars and folks wearing expensive jewelry and assume those folks have $$$$, not necessarily so.
But if one is street smart they will know that all one needs to have in oder to have these so called statement makers is good credit.
I know a person who has a Mercedes SUV and this person does not have to nickles to rub together, but he does have good credit. He would rather sleep in the street and drive a fancy car, what a waste.
snowmanmdp 05-25-2008, 05:48 AM The you must be rich thing could not be more right on the head! I drove the new vette "85" to mothers day and my family wanted to know who was the rich one. I traded my 2006 polaris snowmobile for it! The insurance on the vette is half of what it was on the snowmobile. The thing that is also true is everything for a vette cost more because it's for a vette.:burnout:
ApexerER 06-22-2008, 11:37 PM I just purchased a 89 Vette for $5900 bucks. It is in VGC. Now everyone I know is acting weird. My neighbor made a (MUST BE NICE COMMENT) and hasn't spoken to me since. I manage a gas station and I herd at least 50 times "no wonder gas is so high". I bought a Buick Raineer with a sticker price of 43K last year ( I didn't pay that) and nobody said a word.
sexyc4 06-23-2008, 08:04 AM Really just depends on what you are buying. Vettes can be cheap or they can be expensive!
jtoombs 07-01-2008, 06:53 PM hey guys, i just bought my first vette last week for 3500. its a 89' L98 with 214xxx. ive put close to 200 miles on it so far and love it. im only 20 and work at a local movie theater making 7/hr lol. i live on my own and drove around a 49cc scooter since december so i could save most of my money. needless to say it really payed off :D
