My '87 has 320,400 miles on it. It had just over 200,000 when I bought it. So I haven't really horsed it. But have had it over 100 a few times. It's certainly no land speed record, but just to show high mileage Vettes still handle really well. Because I was on a pretty curvy road while at that speed and the car handled just fine.

I been up to 130 on I 69 heading west to I 75 north in Michigan. I saw a kid beating the crap out of his Grand Prix going 110 to 120. I was doing exzaly 69 on I 69 when he flew by me. I just couldn't resist my curiosity on how fast I could catch him. So it was 1 HailMarry and a wide open throttle. I don't think those stickers on his door helped him go faster because I caught up to him in no time and slowed back don just when I passed him. There was no real traffic due to it being lte at night so.I guess I gave it a free 4 all run. That was the only time I spead in that car. :ack2: :ack2:

It had a 427 a iron block and L88 heads and intake. :thumbsup3: It also had a cam that some boozo installed that didn't know what he was doing. I got the car running like a stripped a$$ banshee. It took me three days of test driving to make sure it was running right. Anyway one of those days i had my brother in law riding with me. We were sitting at a stop sign when a friend of his past by us on the cross street in a 78 Trans Am going 110mph. My brother in law ask if I could catch him I just smiled and jumped on it. His friend stayed on it and we pasted him in somewhere around a mile way over 160mph. That was as high as the speedo read and we hit that number by third. The brother in laws friend asked him a week or two later : What in the hell is in that Vette? I think he just smiled and said a big block.

And I took it to 125 on the drive from Houston to IL when there wasn't anyone around, but stopped cause it was dark and I didn't know the road.

I expect I like to go fast as much as the next guy or gal but having crashed couple of race cars on the track I just can not see going over 100 mph on a public road with no real safety equipment and no live stock (cows, deer, dogs etc.)control.Crashs hurt. On public roads I drive close to the posted limit and enjoy.

You better be careful in Florida. The speeding fine is over $1000 if you are going more that 50 MPH over the speed limit!!!

On a cruise in August, got up to 100 on the Interstate.

Took a quick pic on a cruise earlier this year.

Fast enough, for me.
Not a fan of tickets, last one was back in 1974.

I hit 12? this wekend playing with a lotus. My wife started screaming when I tapped the brakes to go around a corner. She says I took it at 110. Didnt seem that fast to me since I was on the Lotus's a$$ and passed him when the road straightened out. Them Lotus's can turn pretty good but they aint got nothing on a V-8 in the straights. I would love to do it again but I gotta leave the wife at home next time.

What Lotus was it?, GM employed the Lotus crew to build the LT series engines, not many a Lotus can be whipped, i'll bet he pulled out.
'Lotus' has been a world class designer and builder for decades and make super high reving, twin cam, world winning engines along with Ferrari, thats why GM wanted them , to help get 'Corvette' sales up and get more power out of the Pushrod V8, LT [Lotus] series they can be beat, but they are not easy.
Lotus excell i beleive was a 2.2 litre 4 cylinder, high rever, small car, could not whip most corvette's in a srtraight line, but was superb on corners etc.

Even though I like Lotus cars, GM didn't need them for the ZR-1. Olds wanted to make the W-43 engine, it would have put away everything-shelby cobras, hemi 'cudas, LS-6 chevelles.

Most likely the Excell then, twin cam 4 cylinder one of their smaller ones, You were lucky, that was the baby Lotus, should have been called the 'Focus' unlike their high reving ferrari competing V12!
Those can push you approx 200 mph in a mile or so, with a mild 400 hp and approx 4.5 litre or so.

That wasn't with the 84. That was in 89 with a little Ford and it was floored. Seriously I've only hit about 115mph and that was on a two laner in the boonies where all we had to worry about were deer and moose's in the UP.

I remember the same thing about the poles at around 150. But to me the dotted line seems to start blurring toward looking solid.
I don't think the pre 91s could break 170 without a lot of HP...i would guess close to 1000Hp. Their aerodynamics are too square for those speeds.
Up in those numbers most cars start hitting a wall to keep from going faster. On the flats i couldn't do it untill i went to narrower wheels with semi-solid tires. A guy there lent them to me and i don't remember exactly what they were.
From others, who had enough money, i have seen that wind tunnel test show the rounded rear bumper of 91s up have a better flow to get faster...I was shocked to see that the rear made more difference than the nose.
Callaway had some problems getting the speedster (?) up over 195 from what i read. He literally had to form rounded edges on the fender openings and side vents using duct tape to break 200...about that time i remember every-one started calling it 200mph tape...around the same time a funny car used it to hold a broken body together reinforcing that name.
As well as these cars are designed they just don't do over 200mph with-out some serious detailed changes to the suspension and body as well as the engine. The ZR-1 might in factory set-up, but it is only because they changed some of the dimensions in the rear...remember what i said about wind tunnel tests.
Around 150 the 84-90 body is becoming too unstable to continue and the 91up starts showing that also at around 175. It is tempting fate to try to pass those speeds w/o aerodynamic changes. Just try to remember that while you are out playing in them.
I had a lot of people volunteer help to me when i tried the flats. With-out that help i wouldn't have had a chance at doing as well as i did. I know there is no way i could do it again on my own.

I have only had mine up to about 110 or so. I'm with a few of the others when they said they had too much to lose. Also had a small vibration that increased with speed so I didn't wanna push that, I think it's the bearing but we'll see. I'd like to at least hit 125 or so maybe higher depending on how it feels but it'll have to wait til I get a new bearing and stuff and everything has to feel perfect or I won't push it. As far as the cops if I'm already over a hundred I'll just get off at the next exit, they won't catch me that quick. Especially around here, they still use the Crown Vics with the governors that kick in at 120 or 130...

:vomitbuddy: :drool5: I was reading these and remembered that back in 1979 I replaced a headgasket on this young ladys 1968 Vette. In the mid 70's I had an RP 68 Vette. 500 hp full race 2800lbs and the fastest I ever went was about 154 on a race track and it was clocked. Your speedo was off and so is your common sense for doing that on the street

This was a clever thread. Most of us who own a Corvette liked to go fast, at least at some point in our lives, even if long before we owned a car capable and safe enough to go that fast. Problem is, nowadays, pushing a hundred on an overpass or entrance ramp is about the quickest thrill you can get away with, though still risking your license. However, memories can be fun, too, like swapping the 85 speedo in an 84 Monte Carlo SS for a 140, adding headers, cams, re-jet carb, & chip to add 100hp, ... and then burying the needle on a 5 mile straight dead-end desert road to nowhere in then desolate north-east Scottsdale, and being glad to say you don't know how fast you were going. Whew!

Stayed in it, saved it with one foot in the grass and the 315's layin down rubber...the spectators complimented me on the action later. The shakes lasted about 10 minutes cause it was a close one. I had my first C4, an 86 automatic coupe I only owned about a year, up to 149 mph. It might have been just a touch higher but then I had to look away to keep my eyes on the road slowing down. I also later had a new 88 convertible that I would get to about 120, but only a couple times. But back to my 86, when I was a senior in high school a college girl I was dating at the time lived in a small town nearby and after our dates I would come home around 1 or 2 AM and hit a lonely stretch of highway where it regularly allowed me to go 125 for about 2 minutes. I was home in no time!
