I have a 1973 C3 Corvette that I just bought that is in very poor shape. I have the car up in the air and have been trying to remove the exhaust. The problem is the exhaust, clamps and bolts are all so rusted together even up to the headers. I have tried WD 40 and soaking and can't get the clamps or bolts to break loose?

What can do here?

Arre you running stock exhaust manifolds or headers? As for the rest of the exhaust, if the nuts and bolts won't come loose, then it will be cutting, breaking to remove your exhaust.

One other thing you can try is heating the nuts. On rusted bolts, try striking the heads with a flat punch to shock the bolts and threads. Sometimes this will work. Doing this has got me out of a few jams before....

I'm in the same position as you, I just bought a 1973 that is in ROUGH shape. I got it for only $1200 with no transmission or motor broken passenger window and now that I have seen your post it reminds me there is no exhaust neither. The underside of the car is rusted pretty bad. I bought the car for a project.

If the WD40 isn't loosening things up, heat up the parts and try vice grips to loosen. If this doesn't work you most likely need to cut them off. :(

Good luck!

:iagree: Its probably time to break out the BFH/rope gloves/punch/goggles/torch. Exhaust systems are one of the most neglected parts of cars and by the time you get to it, theyre ususally a total loss.

Good luck with that, especially up towards the headers!

Best thing is to use a torch. Cut-em loose in no time.Just have extinguisher handy(as always) and use tinted goggles to avoid eye flash or burn. Stay away from gas tank and or lines if possible. Wet down bunch of rags and keep wrapped around any flammable areas,
Be smart about this, as it can be dangeroud. WD-40 is not going to help heavy rusted bolts, and clamps.

That is what God made hacksaws and reciprocating saws for. As faar as the exhaust manifolds go, if you want to use them, take them off, heat the studs and replace them, and paint the manifolds with the new cast iron look paint. Have fun!
