: 84-cv timming setup

my 84 quit at an idle....apears that the timming gears gave up...checked for dist rotation...turned a bit,but jerky an eratic....does the l83 have nylon timming gear set...has anyone replaced this set with a gear drive....also ,looks like the rack may have to be moved to pull harmonic ballencer....any input is appreciated....Dennis and Tammy Harper:givemebeer.sml:

My early 84 had a nylon top gear, can use a steel gear for replacement. Those pistons have big valve reliefs so your valves may be ok. If you want to, you can loosen the rocker arms up, blow some compressed air into the spark plug hole(use a gutted comp. tester), if the crank turns, than the cyl. is air tight.
Gear drive is too noisy, upsets knock senser. You have to unthread the p/s line on top of the rack so you can use a puller & installer tool. You will have to pull the oil pan loose, I have never had any luck putting the cover back on w/ the oil pan on tight.

Removing the rack will make taking the balancer out 100% easier.:thumbsup:

Yes, & so would removing the engine. Thats not a good way to waste your time. I have done the R&R of the balancer a dozen times, just take loose the line on top of the rack, he probably has the job done anyways.
