Hi everyone.
First of all, thanks to everyone that supplied advise on the hard right pull on my 1980. The problem is fixed thanks to you. :sm_party: :givemebeer.sml: : I now am tracking down the answer to a new battery question. I need a new battery and several battery dealers are hesitant because of the venting situation with a battery compartment on the inside of the passenger compartment. What is the best direction to go with a new battery? And also, my Gen. light is on constantly. Just what does a Gen. light tell me (what does it monitor)? I realize that battery voltage is involved here, but should a correctly working alternator provide enough voltage to make the gen. light go out. The guage shows a healthy charge from the alternator. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what areas to start looking in. :happy0045: Thanks

a maintainence free battery came in your car but if you are concerned about it being in passenger compartment, just get a gel type battery like Optima

I am a firm believer in the Optima batteries.

Your idiot light on your dashboard is wired into your charging system to turn ON any time your alternator's charging voltage DOESN'T exceed your battery voltage, and it turns OFF when your alternator's charging voltage DOES exceed your battery voltage. So it's your alternator's output voltage that determines whether or not your idiot light is on. You can have a good output from your alternator, but at too low of a voltage to turn the idiot light off. I suggest checking your alternator's output voltage first. It should be between 13.8 volts to 14.2 volts at about 1000 engine rpm. If it isn't between 13.8 volts and 14.2 volts, your voltage regulator inside your alternator is bad and it needs to be replaced (easy to do yourself for less than $20). For a replacement battery, it's best to get a maintenance free battery to prevent it's fumes from getting in your cabin. The last time I replaced my battery, I forgot to get a maintenance free battery and I DO smell it's fumes on occasion. But even when I do smell it's fumes, it's only for a brief moment. No big deal. I'll just get the correct battery next time.

So did you solve your battery problem yet? Did you go with a maintenance free battery? Your generator light turns OFF whenever your charging voltage EXCEEDS your battery's voltage. As simple as that!
