: Oh No!! Wheel bearing
Disturbed 01-28-2008, 04:22 PM On my way to dinner tonight my wheel bearing strated squeaking, squealing and grinding real hard. It was really sudden. Do you think it might need to be repacked, or replaced? I will be diging into it more tomorow to see what I can see. Anyone know how difficult it is to replace a wheel bearing? Any special tools needed?? and $$$ ??
cmcbunch 01-28-2008, 04:34 PM If the wheel bearing is grinding its dead. Just a matter of time before it comes apart. Wheel bearings are cheap and not very difficult. If you have a chilton for the vette it'll walk you thru the process. shouldn't cost more than 30 bucks for bearings and two days work at most. Don't drive on it too much longer. The last sign is when the noise stops. Then the bearings come apart.
Disturbed 01-28-2008, 05:14 PM it started about 6 mi. ago I brought it to my friend (diesel mechanic) he said he will take a look at it this weekend, by the time I got home the sound almost completly stopped. i am hving my supervisor take me to and from work the rest of this week. I need to get it running this weekend. I is my only mode of transportation while my Motorcycle is down. I dont have a chilton only a hanes. Corvette dealership told me on a 91 I was looking at that it would be about $150 . Is it really that much cheeper on an 86. (Labor $ taken into consideration.)
randy76h 01-28-2008, 09:50 PM wheel bearings are expensive, u should replace both rear wheel bearing hubs at the same time, because if one is bad you can bet the other is close behind it. you can get the hubs ferom the partsladi on ebay fairly cheap at about 79.00 bucks each.
good luck
Randy

Thanks randy. I'll see if i cant hunt her out.
cmcbunch 01-29-2008, 08:08 AM Oh yeah thats right. Corvettes have hubs. My bad. Those are expensive. They arent difficult to replace tho. Havent done hubs on mine yet, just bearings on a million other cars.
LT1Power 03-26-2008, 08:32 PM Whoops, posted a new thread on this same topic. Mine just started sqeeking and "rr rr-ing" when taking left turns. Sounds like it's a cheap and relatively easy fix. Now the only challenge is to find a jack that fits under this extremely low car
LT1Power 03-27-2008, 06:00 PM Does anyone have the torque specs for the rear wheel bearing and hubs for a 1992 vette?
SportsCarsUnlimited 03-27-2008, 06:52 PM Your Corvette has a sealed bearing and hub assembly, They cost around $100.00 each front or rear. The front are easy to replace the rear are a little harder but can be done at home. Only replace the one that is bad. Some last 150000 miles and some 450000 miles.
P.S. The way it sounds to me, (squeking, squealing, grinding) you probably have a bad u-joint not a wheel bearing check it first.

LT1Power 03-27-2008, 08:44 PM Thanks for the info. I finally got the rear end off of the ground and wiggled the wheel and sure enough it had a LOT of play in directions that wheels should not travel. I guess it's time to replace the bearings.
Mike-RotorsOnline 03-27-2008, 10:00 PM If you are interested I have Timken bearings & wheel hubs available.
lee@zip-products258 03-28-2008, 07:42 AM Be careful on what you buy when it comes to a part like that.It may be a small part but doent buy a cheep part to hold the wheel on i sell ac-delco hub assemblies all day long and they start at 249.99 up to 300.00 depending on the year. I also sell a cheeper one for the rear but not the ac-delco quality at about 149.99.:leaving: So i guess it comes down to how much do you trust aftermarket to hold a wheel on?
LT1Power 04-05-2008, 07:35 PM Got a problem taking the bearing/hub assembly off. The T55 torques socket slipped and stripped one of the bolts. Any reccomendations? It's not the easiest locations to work in.:ack2:
LT1Power 04-05-2008, 09:58 PM Ok I luckily got that bolt off along with the other three and I was amazed to find a hunk of metal in the hub housing. I've attached the pic if anyone is interested. I'm glad I caught this early, this piece of metal could have caused a lot more harm.
