While here might as well ask all the questions I have!
On my 1985 Vette the steering is a bit on the tough side, now could this be the power steering pump? Or could it be other things? I made another post talking about wanting to take care of all my little problems with my Vette and this is the last major one.
If it could be nothing but the power steering pump. Any one have any tips on replacing this. Actually where or who would have a power steering pump for a 1985 for sale?
Thanks again, I greatly appreciate your help!

I am having a prob with my steering as well. In fact it caused me to loose control @ 86MPH. the other night and go spinning about 100 ft. Made 3 full rotations, and ended up crossing 6 lanes of traffic ending up facing the other direction. Fortunatly I work 3rd shift and there was nobody on the road. but I almost ate the curb.
n e way. I had mine diagnosed as being the powersteering pump It will be a month or so before I will be able to replace it.
i dont know what yours is doing but when mine is cold it seems to have a dead spot in it where it will be tough to steer then it will release very quickly. I was in a turn when mine released and sent the backend around. (Damn dry-rotted, high profile tires, I would have recovered. When the rear end came back the first time I got it stright but I felt the side walls flex and that was the end of that.)

Boy, this is a tough one without knowing more about the problem. It could be a PS pump or steering box, or just worn front end parts.
You might try flushing the Power Steering system first just in case the system is clogged or the control valve is stuck. It will probably take 5-6 quarts of fluid to do it right, and make a mess, but it might solve your problem.
Good Luck.

Just got through sucking the reservoir in my 87....black and scummy. Put new in but cannot run it until the snow and ice goes....1/2 mile of dirt road.Run it for a few miles with constant turns....flush it again...fill again.....run it again....flush it again and then fill it again. The same goes for the brake fluid. Left for years they will cause the rubber seals to go in the steering and brake system. They are often overlooked.:(

Suck out the reservoir again and keep doing it until clear. The brakes I will bleed until clear according to FSM....Hand pump good for sucking out reservoir in PS and differential.

This might be a good time to ask about my problem. I have an 85 and at low speeds 25-65 there is occasionally a wobble in the steering(can get violent sometimes) I verified the balancing on the wheels and the rotors arent warped. I'm not very experienced with rack and pinion steering so i figured I'd ask.

:thud: i had somethig like that in my 99 ranger. It would do the same thing. Only it got bad enough that i would be driving down the road and it would suddenly jerk really har to the point of changing lanes. (very dangerous) It ended up being sticking valves in my rack and pinnion. I def. would have that diagnosed.
