I want to increase the MPG on my 75' stingray. Any suggestions? I am swapping the engine but considering the price that won't be for a while. It will soon be clutch with 2.5" mufflers. got any ideas

If you want to substantially increase your fuel mileage, an overdrive transmission is the ONLY way to go. If you presently have an automatic transmission, get a 700R4 to replace it. If you have a manual transmission, there are several manual transmissions to choose from that offer overdrives.

Drop the 3.55 rear gear to 3.08 or 2.73, add the overdrive trans and SMILE!

2.73 will kill whatever performance you had

I agree. But mileage will improve, and it's also a good excuse to build some horsepower. :toocrazy:

I went to transmission.com and there are several levels to the 700R4 and some offer more horsepower and torque than others. Would it be the higher the hp and torque the lower gas mileage?

I noticed that the 700r4 is only a 4 speed. are there any that are 6 speed?? I was looking at tremec but realized that went up to 5 speed for my car?.

Inflate your tires to 90 psi. Another trick for getting better fuel mileage is to always drive down roads that are going downhill. And only drive in the same direction the wind is blowing.

I have a T56 6 speed standard in mine. 70 mph=1700 RPM in 6th gear with 3.73 gears.Tires are 26.5'' tall. Oh yeah, 28 mpg with ls1.

Nicee!! now that sounds like something i want; but isn't the T56 6 speed a manual transmission? I'm trying to stick with automatic. I heard they came out with an 8 speed but i don't think that's for me lol. I'll keep the T56 6 speed in mind though. One last thing, how much did it cost? i can't find a specific price online.

wow 77ls1vette that sounds like a real deal! :)

My 79 vette has a 700r4 transmission with 3.42 gears and lock-up kit on its at 60 mph=23,000. But I am using mine for racing... :burnout:

Have you taken yours to the track?

Simple and cheap ways to get better MPG = Making sure your tires are inflated properly and your alignment is good will help alot. A clean airfilter and synthetic lubes (oil, tranny, differential, power steering etc.,etc.,)will also help alot. Using your gas going down hills and try to cost up hills helps. ( I just don't want to be stuck behind you unless I'm doing the same thing)

Switching to a 700r4 would help alot but it's not a direct bolt in. ( I would like to do the same thing) So not only the cost of a new transmission you have to modify the cross member and move it back from what I was told.
*(In my Opinion)*
Maybe you drive your vette more than me but I don't care about gas mileage that's what my other cars are for.
