: TPI Headache!!!!!

Briefly, I put a TPI from an 86 camaro on my 350 bored 60 over, with mild cam, headers. After many weeks and several "professionals" later, I still have the same issues. The car will not start when cold (at air temp) and when forced to start by opening the throttle, it runs terrible - no idle... After getting warmed up, it will start fine - runs up to1500, drops down to 800-900rpms. But, then when driving, and stopping (stop signs...) the idle drops to 400 or less; hit the throttle and it takes off. I've changed just about everything I can replace. Set the iac and tps, with no change. I've replaced badly foulded plugs weeks ago, and will pull one out tomorrow and check again.

Why does opening the throttle (giving it more air) make it start? Is the starting and low rpm's related? Why does it run so good, once it starts correctly? If its running too rich, why is it? Any ideas... thanks - kip

PS - I disconnected the connector at the 9th injector, and put a small light bulb in the connector. With the engine turning over, the light never lit. My bold assumption is that the 9th injector is not being activated, and perhaps because the air temp here is probably around 80. Is this causing the car not to start???

Checked the fuel pressure, and it's holding a steady 40 pounds. Also have a noid light to check the ninth injector connection... thanks

Can you get a scanner?
If not, then you'll have to do it the hard way.
The 1st thing I'd check is make sure the fuel press. is in spec. does it hold fuel press. when the key is off? Check the vacuum line to the fuel press. reg. no fuel should be present.
Check the coolant temp. senser, using an ohm meter, measure the restistance of the senser.
70* = 3400 ohms normal warm day, cold engine.
-40* = 100700 ohms It'll read this if there is a open wire to the CTS, or a really cold day.
210* = 185 ohms fully warmed up.
you can put the coolant temp. senser in a freezer & put a lighter under it to measure different ranges.
Also, clean your maf senser, check grounds, check ign. timing, good luck.

It sounds to me like your engine is running REAL rich. Because you are fouling spark plugs and you have to open the throttle (more air) to get it started. And running real rich would account for it's dying at stop signs. You say you got this TPI system off of another car? I assume you got the wiring harness and computer for it off of the other car also? It sounds very much like your IAC motor isn't working at all, and your engine isn't getting any air to it. So I would verify your IAC motor is working before checking anything else. And also re-check the closed throttle voltage of your throttle position switch.
