I've been told that the q-jet (quadrajet) would go perfectly with my 75 stingray. I don't know much about carbs. are their any better ones? The engine is most likely going to be a fastburn 385 turn key.

there are many choices that are good , depending on how you drive and what other components you have but check with the builder he knows the engine best , get his recomendation

the builder? are you talking about like GMPP etc. or the person who is putting the car together?

where you get the motor they should have recomendation for carb size , what carb did they use to compute advertised HP? if its a GM replacement then go with what came on it if you can t get that info, call edelbrock or holley tech line give them specifications on your motor and they will tell you what their best match is don t guess the right carb will make an enormous difference as will the wrong one

The Rochester Quadrajet is one of the best carburators ever made, and every part imaginable is available for them. And they will flow 750 cfm to boot. You can buy jets and metering rods for them in every size you could ever need, so getting them dialed in for any engine combination is an easy task. The only drawback to them is the long front mounting bolts. They MUST be snugged down ONLY or you will warp the lid and body. The other drawback is they can't stand more than 3-4 pounds of fuel pressure. Because the little float in them doesn't have much leverage. But with a pressure regulator on them, that's an easy problem to solve.

and one more , on manual trans cars at hi rpm shifts, they don t recover fuel fast enough for accelerate pump and can hestate after shift automatic cars don t have a problem as you don t need to release throttle to shift

Aren't you running a Rochester Quadrajet now? As the Quadrajet has an AVS (air valve secondary) and it will flow 750 cfm, it is one of the best carburators ever made. Because of it's AVS and the fact that it will flow 750 cfm, it is at home on very small engines AND engines up to 454". And every performance part you can imagine is available for them. Holley makes a spreadbore replacement for the Quadrajet, and it's also a darned good carburtor. Take your pick. The only drawback to a Quadrajet is their very small float bowl and the fact they can't stand too much fuel pressure (they will easily flood if the inlet pressure is too much). But pressure regulators are inexpensive and they will easily cure any flooding problem you might have.
