I have a 73 but years ago in Bloomington I bought the later (74? 76?) style rearview mirror, which is wider and has a built in map light. It was in near-mint condition, and had the leads for the light still intact. I only paid $15 for it! What a bargain. Imagine my surprise when I got home and wired it up, and found that the original bulb in it was still there and worked! Really a bargain! Anyway, it has recently finally gone out, and now I need a replacement. Bought the bulb, followed the instructions printed on the bottom of the mirror for the exchange, but partially in my haste I kinda pulled the light assembly out. I was thinking of doing it anyway because it appeared the bulb was loose inside and I wanted to get to it to fix if needed. As I was messing around it came out a little sooner than I thought, but I don't think it matters. What I need help with is, according to the pictures provided, is everything appearing as it should, i.e. not bent or "screwed", and does it look like my attempts at "reconstructing" the assembly are correct? What I really want to know is if I have messed anything up, and if my thoughts on how it goes back together are correct. The bulb in some of the pics isn't fully connected and I am aware of that. I tried once to put it all back inside the mirror and the bulb popped loose, so I figured having you guys give some opinions might save me from getting frustrated and maybe breaking something. So, thoughts, suggestions, opinions please? Thanks in advance.

Big T, it appears to me something got really bent out of shape. I think there's something wrong with the brass bulb holder. Are you sure it's the shape it's supposed to be? It just doesn't look right to me.

I agree the thing looks really bent, but I am pretty sure it wasn't much if any different when I took it out, although I can't swear to that. It seems the long piece is what engages/disengages against a protrusion inside the mirror when slid, to turn on/off the light. It was working flawlessly before this, so it was either in the same shape before, or I really DID bend it all to heck. Either way, it doesn't seem to want to keep the bulb held in place when reinserted into the mirror, and I was hoping maybe someone had seen one of these apart before, to confirm what shape the assembly should be in. I suppose having a working map light is a small thing, but now I am more curious about the whole deal than whether I can get it working again.

Does it have a brand name on it somewhere? If it does, maybe you can write to the company and get assembly instructions for the thing. Other than that, I don't have any suggestions. Is one of those brass ends spring loaded? It just doesn't look right to me. Something looks bent. If you're absolutely sure you didn't bend anything out of shape, there has to be some way to make it work properly again. I wish I could be of help to you...................
