Not sure if anyone would know this answer or if anyone would agree with me that superchargers and turbos are pretty pricey? This is not new technology in most cases so why or what makes these things to pricey?

That's an easy question, do a complete part break down of one, simple as that. Head units have very high manufacturing expenses because of the equiptment needed to make them, exspecially the impeller. The bracketry requires high dollar CNC machines to manufacture, plus all the unpaid R&D time.
A complete SC kit that includes everything necessary has a ton of small costly parts, then everything has to be assembled, packaged and so on. I think you would be surprised if you knew exactly what the industry std profit margin was on an SC kit. Lets just say we work on volume. :)

Thanks for the reply Doug, I have always wondered about certain parts in the aftermarket world. It just amazes me the cost of these parts! Don't get me wrong the numbers that some of these companies show for these parts is pretty amazing. I was just wondering whether manufactures charge a higher premium because the HP it will deliver? Did that come out right?

If you can afford them, money well spent in opinion. I would like to try to get one myself this year. I'll wait till after tax season!

Its basic, you want big HP you pay big bucks and these companies know this!

Yep thats how it works. I have been watching for the perfect deal for my ride. I was orginally thinking about head and cam, but after getting this I decided I wanted more. So I have been watching ebay on daily basis, and keeping my eyes out for a steal! Now I have been told that if I get a supercharger I will need to change out my cam!

Which cam do you have? It's always better to go with a cam with less overlap so you're not bleeding off boost into the exhaust but it doesn't mean if you add a supercharger you're aren't going to see any gains. We had a customer with AFR 205's and a LG Motorsports G5X3 cam that wanted a Vortech kit on his C5 but didn't want to switch cams. He still picked up an extra 100rwhp @ 5psi (the kit was rated at 8-9 psi but it bled off some of the boost with his cam choice).

Thats so cool, there are so many different variables in setting up HP in motors? The impact that a cam has, cam has on blower. Cool stuff.

I think you just dont know the tolerances that these things are manufactured to. An impeller that turns 120,000 rpm has a lot of dynamic forces applied to it. Its not like a factory car where they cut the blocks with bandsaws giving a 3 or 4 thousandth of an in margin. Look at aircraft parts. A gearbox that runs the flaps and slats up/down can cost $300-500k, and its essentially an automatic transmission.

I don't know anything about aircraft parts so I will have to take your word on that one. But you made a good point. I was really one of those thinking moments I had. Just thinking about where the value comes from and how pricing was put together.

If everyone bought one the cost of manufacturing would come down. Higher volume=lower cost.

But because most *car* owners don't know/care about what's under the hood when they go to the dealership the volume isn't there. Even the new ZR1 will be in limited production.
