playloudd308 01-21-2008, 07:41 PM okay i am ready to buy a c5 vette. I was trying to decide between a z06 and a regular c5 with some mods. I am probably going to go with a regular c5. What are some good/affordable forced induction kits?
also how do the c5's do with forced induction on stock internals/high mileage(around 80k)?
tstar 01-21-2008, 09:59 PM Wait for Tom to pipe in here for a very edugated answer, but here's my take on it.
The most affordable is probably the Pro Charger. The Pro Charger doesn't require a high rise hood, saving alot right there...Typically the Superchargers run a grand or two less then a Twin Turbo set-up.
I'm kinda old school though. Our engine has six bolt mains and is just about as tough as can come out of a factory! As with most high HP mods you have to look at the total car, torque tube, output shafts ect... I believe a stock Vette can handle up to 450 HP fairly easily...
Mileage doen't mean much to me, it's how it was maintained and treated that matters, of course buying used you rarely know that. I'd look for tell tale signs above your normal checklist when buying used. Like an aftermarket shifter, bolt-on power mods, excessive (for the mileage) clutch pedal wear, rear tires excessively fried compared to the fronts ect... to give you an indication if the car was "abused".
Hope that helps...

playloudd308 01-22-2008, 08:23 AM if i went with a procharger setup on a stock c5 about what kind of rwhp numbers would i be seeing. also about how much can one of their kits be found for?
tom snitzer 01-22-2008, 09:52 AM I have two C5s(coupe and Z06). My street car is the coupe, the Z06 is a track only car.
Hands down I would get a Z06. It's better looking, lighter, has better suspension and a host of other improvements. The only disadvantage is the removable top. PS. The look of the Z06 grows on you with time.
Owning both, I'm hopefully objective.
As for FI, you can go either TT or SC on stock internals. My street vette has a centrif blower and produces 740 rwhp. Ergo it's highly modded.
If you want to feel the extra hp, I would not do a centrif blower. They only come on after about 3,500 rpm. You don't really feel that as much on the street. (They are great for drag racing/1/4 mile however).
On the other hand a APS Twin Turbo will produce power down low. The same can be said for a Maggie or a Kenne Bell. If you want to have the car looked modded, I would consider the Kenne Belle and a high rise hood. If you don't want to both with a high rise hood, then I would go TT route.
Again, I'm a happy centrif blower owner, but if you want to spend a reasonable amount of money and feel like your car is a rocket ship, I would pursue other FI options.
Good luck!
playloudd308 01-22-2008, 10:11 AM i deff. would prefer the z06 over the regular c5 but the only problem is i wouldnt have any money left to put into performance if i went with the z06. would you prefer a forced induction c5 or a stock z06?
edit: what hood do you have on yours it looks amazing

The difference between a used Z06 and coupe isn't very much. I would bite the bullet and go for the Z06, even if it means delaying your mods 6 months. I really think you'll be glad you did.
PS. My hood is made by ACP.
Good luck.
Wicked Weasel @ ECS 01-22-2008, 02:11 PM I always boil down the decision between Coupe and Z to
do you want the roof to come off or not? Everything else can be modded so the roof is the only issue. When I bought my C5 I wanted it as a summer car and the roof had to come off so I bought a Coupe. I am now converting it to a road race car and if I knew that years ago I would have bought the Z.
Either way you will have fun
playloudd308 01-22-2008, 06:33 PM i deff. do like the frc's alot better than the other body styles. i just think they look sexier. the only problem is i would have to delay more for the power i want but i guess its better to get what you really want in the first place.
i have driven a few and they both have as much power as i would need.. buut, you can never have enough power.
someone also suggested changing the gearing but im not too sure about that. i still want to have that top end there if i ever want to play with it. plus gas mileage would suffer alot around town.

I was able to pick up a clean 2002 Z06 for $23,000 about 6 months ago. If you look around I suspect you will find a Z06 for about the same price as a coupe. The additional amount you need to pay on a used one is fairly modest.
As for a diff rear end. If you go with a FI in the future you likely won't need a different rear end.
