Hi,
I'm new to the forum and this is my 1st posting. I'm shopping for a C6 Vette and am doing my research and homework before making a purchase. What are the best bolt on mods for the LS2 engine? Should I go with an aftermarket cat back exhaust system (If so, which brand), CAI (Which is the best brand for the most bang for the buck), ECU reprograming etc. (Again-recommended brand). Thanks

Hi and welcome to the SmokinVette. There are many excellent mods that you can purchase for a C6 LS2 engine. A lot will depend on what sort of $$ you want to spend. In terms of programmers Diablo Preditor is a quick "do it yourself" system that you will see some results from... all though I would recommend getting a professional tune as it is more detailed to your specific Vette. With regards to exhaust there are so many options you can look at... a large factor here is how "aggressive" do you want your car to sound? From our experience if you are looking for a respectable sound yet not to loud... Corsa makes a couple great options 3.5" Sports (we had and liked) or their Touring system which is more mild of a sound.

If you are looking for a more aggressive sound then I would recommend going with a B&B system. On one of '05's we are running Kooks 1 7/8" headers, Kooks 3" X pipe with the B&B Bullet axle back system... this car is insanely loud! Then our other '05 is currently running stock headers B&B X pipe, and the B&B axle back system. This set up is still very aggressive and turns heads!

Other options under the hood you can add: Include cold air intake (variety of brands available we have blackwing and like), throttle body spacer, electric water pump, upgrade ignition set up, etc...

There are larger things that you can add under the hood such as super chargers, twin turbos, cams, etc... once again it depends on how far you want to go!

You should be pointed in the right direction... let me know if you have any additional questions!

Agree on this! It really depends on how much money you want to spend! There are alot of great companies out there with just about all you could imagine!

There are lots of mods folks do to tweak performance and get better sound out of exhaust. Usually a cam, headers, exhaust system and such can run you $2,000-$3,000+ fast. You will end up with 50-60 more hp and car will sound great.

If you are looking for a big jump in hp, probably a good street application to also consider, which produces the biggest performance gain per $ is a twin turbo. That can easily get you 150-200 more hp, with lots of low end torque. Not cheap, at $10,000 installed, but your car will put down some serious rubber.

I agree that the place to start is a CAI. I recommend the Vararam if you want a true Cold Air Intake, or a Halltech if you just want an easy install that will open up the breathing. As far as cat back exhausts go, choose one based on sound preference as the power gains are minimal. I would not go with a handheld programmer for these cars instead get a true dyno tune from your local tuner. I had mine tuned by Speed Inc. in Schaumburg, IL. Headers seem to really wake up the power on these cars and are a good way to go. I would almost recommend doing headers instead of a catback if you are interested in picking up power and you will get a little better sound out of the stock mufflers.

What would a local tuner shop do that I can't do with bolt on parts? Isn't everything pretty much controled by the ECU?

Your local tuning shop should be able to plug into your computer while it is on the dyno and reprogram your computer to optimize all your settings. I had mine tuned by Speed Inc., the car was completely stock and it went from 343 rwhp and 342 rwtq to 358 rwhp and 355 rwtq!

Again, be careful about spending $3,000 to $4,000 on mods, to pick up marginal gain in performance. Other than having a better sounding car, to really get a signficant gain in power that YOU WILL NOTICE your talking $9,000 to $10,000 for sc or tt install. Save your money till you can afford the twin turbo and then make some serious power. A stock c6 will make 400hp at crank and around 340 at the wheels. With a TT that same car can easily put down 550 at the wheels. that's a 60% gain in hp, with tons of low end torque. That's a mod that will get noticed.
