A buddy of mine just picked up a 2008 about 2 months ago and finally has over a 1000 miles on it and wanted to mess around to see what the quarter mile time was. So we went to a back road and marked off a 1/4 mile. Talking on our cell phones - headsets, he was at the start and I was at the 1/4 mile marker with a stop watch.

Best time was 12.8 and he was going 114MPH. Not to bad. How many of you have done 1/4 mile times like this? This is pretty accurate right?

Well we will put it this way, Its a ball park figure. But when it comes to timing lights at a drag strip, you could go faster or slower. I see these kids around here trying the same thing. They go and mark a 1/4 mile out and time it with a stop watch. Some will be happy when they learn that 200hp allows them to run 12.0's but at the track they run a mid 15 sec pass. But on the other hand some people will try this and run a 14sec pass then go to the track and run a low 13.

I'm as guilty! I have 2 people timing the car if i make some changes to the car to see how she reacts. I have one person timing at the line and one at the end. After the pass is made i split the diffrence between the two times. But when i go to the track i have seen my times be .5 to almost a full second off what we did on the street. Most of the time, im faster on the track then on the street.

If you run one of those G-Tech meters, they are also ball park. They can be very close and a nice tuning tool to have. If i make a pass with a G-Tech meter, i deduct around 5 to 10% off its time. I feel its more accurate that way. I'd rather be suprised at the track to run faster, than be faster and run slower:lol:

Not too accurate and some depends on the temp, altitude and weather of the day. I think GM says a stock '08 manual does a 12.45 and a A6 does a 12.7. So your mileage may vary but for sure its in the ballpark, most likely faster at the strip.

G-Tech is this a tool that the "average" guy can operate?
