Just curious guys, how big of a job is it to install a cam in a C5? I assume this is not for the "DIY" er's?

BTW how much HP can you get out of a cam?

Putting in cam is a little work. The steering rack id a PIA. Horsepower wise it depends on the size of the cam. Larger cams generally have larger peak numbers, but generally don't hit the powerband till 3500rpms+. I would guess a cam install to be around 2 grand including parts. Check out LS1howto.com for diy instructions.

I would agree with Spirals assessment on this subject. My power in my stroker comes on strong at about 3600 rpms and then pulls hard to 6600. This is why I am putting in 3.90 gears to compensate for the lower rpm lag. Most people will be doing heads also while they are doing a cam, they go with one another!

We at TriStar Performance charge right at 2100 for the standard cam package. This includes:

Base dyno pull
Custom or shelf cam
Hardened pushrods
Lunati beehive springs
Double roller chain
All gaskets and seals
GM crank bolt
Full road and dyno tune

To get the most out of any cam the motor must breath in and exit out freely. Be sure you have a good cold air intake and long tube headers before spending the bucks on a cam.
With care a good "DIY"er can get the job done .. but the cost of the parts and the mandatory retune are between $1000 - $1400 it's usually seen as a good deal to have it done by an experienced shop.
Final power numbers will always be a result of your combo of parts. If you send me {or post} any mods you have I will see if I have a C5 dyno sheet saved in our computer that represents your combo on different cam specs / head castings / trans etc.
