: Help with Headlight Adjusters

I'm working on a sweet little Headlight Mod (high and low beam projectors with HID bulbs) and I need to know what the best way to free up the dreaded lower adjuster mechanism is. The one with the long brass colored rod with the splined end. Searching threads it seems this gets stripped a lot and I'd like to avoid that joy.

Thanks!

I took my time and used lots of Gunk Liquid Wrench Silicone Spray.
Sprayed it on let it sit a while and then slowly worked/turned the adjuster back and forth, sprayed some more Gunk, let it sit, etc...

I used regular pliars to turn it but it looks like the splines were designed to be turned with some sort of special tool maybe? Both vertical and horizontal adjusters have the same splines.
Anyone heard of this...?

Can't say that I've heard of that special tool, what cool mod? Something you made?

I'm installing high and low beam HID projectors. They will be in a unique mount system that changes/reduces the lid opening height...

Hope the finished product stays worthy of your praise...

It's been an idea of mine since buying the car in '07.

*Over a year of research/reading/googling/reading/phone calls/reading/repeat/etc...
*9 months aquiring the parts, kits and experience.
*6 months tracking down a really good composites expert.
*All summer waiting for a break in the fire season to get time to work on them.

I'm very close now.
Lights are operational.
Still a little to do on the reduced lid opening adjustments/hardware.
Tomorrow I meet the guy to mold up a nice shroud and maybe a lens to finish it off...

The adjuster rods take a T-15 bit "inside" the splines!!

You may want to leave the headlights on for 10-20 seconds before shutting them off and turning them on again. Continuous On-Off-On usage will SIGNIFICANLY shorten bulb life.

You're so right! I forget that sometimes thanks for the reminder. I forgot to tell the wife who was helping me the other night, too. :food-smiley-019: Bound to be some causalties in developing these. There is another set of bulbs on the way and I was going to try a few different ones, 5k, 6k, 8k.
Oh and these are borrowed...

I'll probabbly give the new ones to the friend I borrowed these from.

When are you going to do a set of low-rise, RF??
Oh, and I forgot to say good luck on your new ventures :thumbsup3:

60mm Hellas They're significantly less expensive and just as HID friendly as the 50s

I like this and will be interested when you get this worked out.

A side question since you're working with the open/close movements. I've installed some HID projectors and now my passenger light does not close all the way. It stays up ever so slightly. Many people miss it but I can tell it is not flush. What I'm wondering is if you have any ideas on what the most likely issues could be. Ever run into something like this? What should I check for? Figured it was worth asking.

Since you've added HID projectors I would start by looking where your wiring is running and if it is routed or looped thru your closing mech.
This picture shows the motor, mount bracket and closing arm with everything in the way removed so you can see the stop points.

http://i702.photobucket.com/albums/ww22/mtndv8/DIY%20shots/IMG_0067.jpg

The stop tab to the left or front of the car is the OEM closing tab. It has a little plastic cap on it.
The lever is in the open position in the picture resting against my first/prototype/test piece to lower my opening height. You can see the slot in the little "L" shaped white plastic tab, that's the OEM opening height stop tab.
(*side note* this "L" shaped piece cracked and failed at just over 140mph...)

If anything gets between the two it will prevent the lid from coming all the way down. (Or opening, for that matter.)
I can't remember if there are any more stop tabs that could be keeping the lid up. I'll look today...

hope this helps.

**edit** I've got a couple other ideas, too.
You can pm me if you want...
