My first Corvette 9 years ago, a 1989 coupe was the first year that GM offered the 6 speed in Vettes, and it was in that one, I then got 3 other C4's through 1994 model, and all of the were 6 speeds as well, and now I have the 02 Z06 and everyone knows C5 Z06's all came 6 speeds too. I never thought about it anymore. and never really thought about having an automatic.

As my '82 only came with the 4 speed 700R4 automatic, I had no choice. But I love my automatic so much, I have no desire to deal with a manual transmission ever again. As I just overhauled my automatic and put some high performance goodies in it at the time of overhaul, it now shifts VERY firm. I really love it when I'm stopped on a steep hill and need to slowly take off; no riding a clutch. An automatic has some BIG advantages over a manual, and they're so reliable, they're almost boring.

C5 corvette has so much torque and power that it is extrememly responsive with an automatic when driving arround town. Last Corvette that I had with a manual tranny was a 1964 Stingray 327/300hp and I still remember shifting from 2nd to 4th all the time because it also had so much torque.

In my opinion the automatic is a great choice for everyday enjoyment.

The last bit of this post is what I feel about the AT, boring.

I agree. There are times that I hate driving a stick, like rush hour, but I still rather have it over an auto.

I wish mine was a 6speed. When I bought my Vette I wasn't really looking for one. It just kind of fell into my lap and was a good deal, and just happened that it was an auto.

My first Vette had a standard, our current C5 has an auto. They both have their benefits and I have no regrets about having an automatic.

I agree 100%. To me, an automatic is a wonderful transmission. They never miss a shift, they are great for starting and stopping on hills, and they are virtually ZERO maintenance.

and zero fun,

ZERO?? How about when you're racing a manual and they miss a shift :smilielol5: (It happens a LOT)

I've been fortunate enough to own 9 vettes so far, only one has been a stick, and no more will be.
I have a little DD sports car with a stick and I get SICK of up and down shifting to get the right gear. My auto (with a little help from HPTuners) ALWAYS knows what gear to go to:burnout:
Everyone has his preference, so I'm glad GM makes them both, but for me, I wanted the MOST performance I could get from my car, and a six speed just can't compete with a properly modded auto unless you're running a roadcourse.

Yes; but I am a WINNING racer. I race to win, so I take the uncontrolled variables out of the equation :burnout:
All else being equal, the modded auto (TC, TM removed, plotted shift points, increased line pressure, altered shift times) is faster than the six speed, and I simply want my cars to be fast.
And in respect to women, I too like a wild ride, but I want one I can DEPEND on too (been married 28 years and have BOTH in one woman  )
In my opinion (and only mine)If the OP wants a car that he can shift, and feel more in "control" of then he needs a manual. If he wants a FAST, quick, consistent car, then it's hard to argue with the 2 1/2 x torque multiplication and perfect, FAST shifts of the auto.
NO disrespect, but if you're saying you've never missed a shift.......:eek2:

NO disrespect, but if you're saying you've never missed a shift.......:eek2:With manual, you can choose exactly which gear you want, and exactly when you want it. If you were to go around a track in an automatic, the auto might hesitate to downshift when you brake. Say you have to brake from third to second gear to get around a turn quickest. In a manual, you can downshift when ever you want, but if you brake and enter the corner in an auto, it might not downshift and you are left with exiting the corner much slower than the car is capable of. Plus, if the auto does downshift, it might take a few seconds and you would loose the competitive edge.On a road course ill take a manual all day long
To each his own my friend, its been a long long time since i missed a gear, kudos on the wife  just prefer the manual myself

Hadn't driven standard for over 40 years - Was buying my first vette and decided on the 6 speed - THE ONLY WAY TO GO IF YOU REALLY WANT TO ENJOY THE CAR!
