: Buffer pad size?

I've been shopping around for a new buffer and have noticed pads as small as 4" to as large as 10". Single buffers to once with two smaller ones built into same machine. What is the preference, the better buffer size to own?

Thanks a lot!

Griot's Garage 6 inch Random Orbital Polisher

A powerful 7 amp (850 watt) motor with low-end torque for low speed polishing for better results, a wider 5/16 - inch (8mm) diameter offset orbit for faster polishing With the Griot's Garage system, a safer and easier way to remove swirl marks, fine scratches, and apply a protective coating to your paint.
Specification:
• 7-Amp, 850-Watt Motor
• 2,500 - 6,800 Orbits Per Minute (OPM)
• Variable Speed
• 5/16"(8mm) offset
• Ergonomic Adjustable Handle
• $130

Porter Cable 7424XP Dual Action Polisher

The polisher is capable of working at faster speeds than the original 7424, which enables the 7424XP to remove more paint imperfections. This more aggressive removal allows you to use the Porter Cable 7424XP Dual Action Polisher for tougher detailing jobs and get optimum results.
• 4.5 –Amp, 450-Watt motor
• 2,500 – 6,800 Orbits Per Minute (OPM)
• Variable Speed
• 5/16"(8mm) offset
• $120

Cyclo Polisher

The Cyclo Polisher is the only dual-head polisher on the market. Both heads move in an orbital motion, counter clockwise. The idea is to simulate hand polishing but at a much faster rate. Going over a scratch or swirl with both heads ensures that you are attacking it from all sides, so to speak.
• 115 Volts, 60 Hertz, 220 Watts
• Motor: alternating current, semi-enclosed 24-bar commutator
• Speed: 3000 orbits per minute (OPM)
• 5/16"(8mm) offset
• Output: 1/3 H.P. (0.25 KW
• Weight: 6.5 lb. (2.9 kg)
• Head Rotation/Diameter: clockwise/4-inch
• Housing: heavy-duty cast aluminium, double insulated
• $270

Flex XC3401V Dual Action Polisher (with forced rotation)

The orbital rotation of this innovative polisher simulates the circular movement of the human hand while polishing. The head also rotates, creating more action than typical orbital’s.
• Maximum polishing pad diameter - 6.5 inches (160 mm)
• Velcro pad - 6- inches (150 mm)
• Motor Amps 7.5
• Speed without load – 3,200 - 9,600 OPM plus 160 - 480 RPM direct rotation
• Orbit (stroke length or offset) - 5/16 - inches (8mm)
• Power input - 900 Watt
• Power output - 590 Watt
• Weight - 5.73 lbs (2.60 kg)
• $300

On most polishers you can change the pad size buy changing the backing plate. I like 6" pads the best. If you're looking for a new polisher and don't have rotary experience I would recomend the Flex XC3401V Dual Action Polisher. It cost more then some of the others but it's worth it.

Pad size will have a difference effect depending on which type of machine is used.

Using a larger pad on a rotary polisher will increase the aggressiveness of the machine by causing the pad to travel a larger distance per RPM.

Using a larger pad on a Dual Action Polisher such as Porter Cable or Meguairs G110 will decrease the aggressiveness of the polishing action. The larger pad increases the surface area which can cause the random orbital motion to stall.

Most people prefer between a 4 inch and a 7 inch pad on a dual-action polisher and between a 5.5 inch and 8 inch pad on a rotary polisher (although 4 inch pads come in handy for doing small spots).

I woudl recommend our High-Gloss Pads, which are made by Lake Country Mfg and use thier highest quality foams. In fact the High-Gloss pads are the ONLY pads to feature Lake Countries highest quality foams in all sizes from 4 inch to 8.5 inch.

Besides having the best foam, all Hi-Gloss pads have features that others do not, including our signature Constant Pressure backing foam, a back cut and raised mounting surface, and a smooth beveled edge. Other pads (even made by Lake Country) tend to have a flat face, and cheap black velcro that runs the length of the back.

Here is a thread showing the difference in our pads and the different pads we carry.
