Rebuilding an 81 from the ground up. Taking out the T350 trans and replacing with a 700R. Has anyone completed this type of project? What about the crossmember? The 700R is about 3 in longer and the cross member needs to be modified to accept the longer unit. This is the last of the rebuild BEFORE body goes back on. Open to suggestions!!

I'm planning on a 2004R Level 2 swap from Bowtie Overdrives for my TH350 in my 79. From what I've been told a 200 is a straight swap,& a 700 requires shortening your driveshaft.

I agree with Shark79... The 200R is going to be the best and easy way to go unless you want to do more mods... The 200R will take some beating,so don't let people tell you its a weak trany... I have put over 500hp to them and they worked fine... The 200r is a TH350 with an OD... The 700r is a TH400 with an OD...

well it will fit, but a 700r4 will fit better. so you cut the driveshaft a bit. then get a shifter mod from shiftworks. a simple detent change gives you all 4 gears. with a corvette servo and shift servos and a shift spring, it will run with any of them. the other one has to be stuffed in with almost no clearence.
I have a 383 with 700r4 runs fine works well.
