I would jack it up and see what you can see and smell.

Fuel from the fuel filter connection was leaking on the exhaust. Has anyone ever seen this happen before???

WOW! That's not good at all. You need to find out why it's leaking and fix it before you don't have your 'Vette any more. Corvettes don't have much of a resale value after they have been burned to the ground. They look much like a limp rag after they have burned.

I got this fixed today by replacing the fuel filter the o rings in it and the connector were bad. I was told this can happen to a 97 I think they moved the fuel filter after 00 no worries after that.
