: Spark plugs
toobroketoretire 08-04-2009, 10:37 AM I would like to see a scientific evaluation of all the popular brands of spark plugs. To put an end to the debate of "which brand of spark plug is the best". Which brand do you prefer and WHY do you feel your favorite brand is better than another brand?
85L98-84L83 08-04-2009, 12:11 PM I would like to try those bosch irridiums with the 4 little prongs. They look good. Whats the deal with irridium? What is so special about irridium?
slrvette 08-04-2009, 12:28 PM I use AC Delco, Why?? Don't really have a preferance on spark plugs just that I always had the opinion that they will work just fine.
Honestly IMO, I don't feel that more expensive plugs are going to do anything more for me than the delco's can. As long as they have good spark, they're good to go.....:burnout: ..
96C44Life 08-04-2009, 12:43 PM Yeah I bought the bosch irridiums...haven't really noticed much difference than when I had the AC Delco in...other than the bigger decrease in my bank account.
CFI-EFI 08-04-2009, 02:17 PM I use AC Delco, Why?? Don't really have a preferance on spark plugs just that I always had the opinion that they will work just fine.

:iagree:
And since whether the spark plug does or doesn't "have good spark" has nothing to do with the plug, performance wise they are all pretty equal. The plug provides the gap and the air/fuel mixture is ignited (hopefully), when the electrical energy jumps the gap. Neither the brand of the plug, nor the composition of the electrodes has much to do with power production. The expensive, exotic metals used in the various up scale plugs DO increase the life of the plug. The longer lasting plugs are less likely to foul and pollute the atmosphere than a common steel or copper plug with a 30,000 mile life expectancy in a maintenance challenged daily driver. For someone that pays to have their plugs changed (labor cost vs parts cost) and/or can't stand to open the hood, the expensive exotics may be of value. I couldn't stand to leave well enough alone for as long as those plugs will last and since the service life is the only advantage, they are a waste of money to a tinkerer or one that cares to "read" their plugs.
RACE ON!!!
85L98-84L83 08-04-2009, 03:09 PM I'm running the basic ac delco in my 85 because they came with the tune up kit I bought on ebay from thepartsladi. But don't let the name fool you(thepartsladi) I phoned there and they are a couple of dudes but there parts are name brand but are cheaper than anyone else.:thumbsup3:
In my 84 I have the bosch +4 platinum. I don't notice any difference. But it could be the crossfire holding back the power of the new plugs:smilielol5:
toobroketoretire 08-06-2009, 11:19 AM Ever since I was a kid, I have been facinated over how many different designs have been used for spark plug electrodes. In the end, I don't think the different styles have ANY advantage over the standard design. I think the only benefit you will ever see is longer lasting spark plugs made out of exotic metals. But as you can easily get 100,000 miles out of a set of standard spark plugs these days, what difference does a "longer lasting" spark plug really make?
I drive my 'Vette about 10,000 miles a year. As spark plugs now last about 100,000 miles, a set of spark plugs last me 10 years. At a cost of about $25 for a set of 8, that's an annual expense of $2.50 to fire the 8 cylinders in my car. Or about 7/10ths of a penny per day. Really pretty cheap when you think about it.
Over the years, I have used ACs, Autolites, Champions, and NGKs. The Autolites appeared to last slightly longer than the others, and I believe that has to do with their thicker electrodes. But as the difference is so slight, I don't think it's any big deal. I say just use plain old ACs and be done with it............

:goodpost: Same here. I just stick with the manufacturer's choice. As CFI-EFI pointed out so well, the more expensive ones only last longer and nothing else.

:goodpost: That's dead on correct.

Why don't you test them yourself. Just do this remove a plug from the car...keep the wire connected to the plug. Hold onto the end of it tight. Have someone turn over the car... then measure how high you've jumped.
Then try the other brands the same way. Depending on how high you've jumped that should give you a good indication as to how much hp you've gained or not. :troll: :troll: :smilielol5: :smilielol5:
