For those of us with older targa coupes, we're all familier with "sticky hatch syndrome" Until recently, the only solutions were to use a spring on the hatch or try to straighten out the latch spring.

GM corrected the design flaw in the 99+ models using a tension spring connected to a heavy duty lever compared to the original torsion spring that would wear out over time. I found the 99+ model is interchangeable with the earlier models and tried it out on my 97 coupe. I grabbed all the parts needed on ebay for $45 shiped. Here's the install:

Total modification time: 30 minutes
Tools needed:
- 10mm socket wrench
- torx 25 screwdriver (could be torx 30) i forgot

Here's the 97-98 latch mechanism.

There are only 4 10mm nuts to be removed from inside the bumper. You can access these by removing the tail lights. The latch only has 2 electrical quick connects that need to be disconnected. The connectors will fit the 99+ mechanism no problem

Here's a comparison between the 2 versions. Note the large spring-loaded lever that makes this all worthwhile:

You will also need to replace the latch striker on the hatch itself. The 99+ one is much more beefy.

The end result: A full "pop" every time. no more prying the hatch up. It's also easier to close the latch without having to slam it.
