: What does your MPG mark say?
lawrence95corvette 07-28-2009, 07:41 PM Hi,
I just got a Corvette 95, previously mentioned here, when I first got it it said 15mpg.
And I drove it home primarily on the highway. It should be more?!
So I did the basic maintenance stuff, like changing oil, coolant, air filter.
I drove it today about 30 miles, in both city and highway...and when I got home, I checked the dash...it said 17.2mpg.
Is this normal, or low still?
Most of you said, I should just ignore the electronics - and test the MPG the old fashioned way, total miles driven divided by how many gallons pumped.
Let me know, thanks

96C44Life 07-28-2009, 08:32 PM In a mix of HWY/City driving that's about what I get..maybe a little lower. But when I drive across Texas on the long country road 70mph at few stops...it jumps up to about 25-26.

Same as what my 95 usually does.

Hey Lawrence. I said that and I stick to it. You need to hand calculate...especially since the car is new to you, and you don't know how much variation the digital read out has, relative to the actual figure.
17.5 seems fine for around town -as others have said- but you need to run through a full tank and hand calculate. Don't forget to "RESET" the "Average MPG" function when you are ready to begin your hand calculation test (when you fill the tank) so the hand to computer comparison is apples to apples.
gwb16 07-29-2009, 09:37 AM In my 84, driving on an extended road trip with very few stops, I averaged about 25, driving back and forth to work 3 days last week with just a few stops (rural setting/commute for me) I averaged 20.
Now two weeks ago, I took her out for a playday and ripped and snorted like a wild man...got me an impressive 12 mpg!
I'll behave from here on out, had to get it out my system but it's awfully nice to know that I have plenty of foot when needed!
BTW, those numbers were hand calculated and my digital display was within 1/10th of my numbers. (Which shocked me!)
robs1988 07-29-2009, 09:59 AM When I was driving mine, the best I could get was 18mpg between city and highway. Mine has trouble codes 32 and 36 set off, so that is probably affecting mine. I'm in the middle of restoring the interior now, so when I finish that I'll get to repairing and rebuilding the motor and see what it gets then. I hate the egr valve location. Stupid code 32...

I don't have a book for my car or anything...do you know how many gallons the 96 holds? I usually never let it get below 1/4 tank of gas before I fill up..I trust my computer reading, but I'd like to hand calculate it like you said.

I do believe the gas tank holds 20 gallons or 75.7 liters.

I think it's about 20 gallons too...but it really doesn't matter if it's 1 gallon or 100 gallons, to do the calcs. All you need to do is make sure that you start w/a full tank and finish w/a full tank. What ever mile driven, divided by the gallons pumped...that's your true MPG.
PS, Your owner manual has all the capacities in it, including the gas tank for your car.

If your fortunate enough to still have it.:(
96C44Life 07-30-2009, 12:35 AM Ah okay, thanks guys. I feel kinda dumb for not figuring that out...but what else is new :happy0045:
pjginex 07-30-2009, 07:33 AM my 92 gets a mix of about 20.3 mpg, 20 mpg the old fashioned way miles divide by gallons.
95vette 07-30-2009, 11:32 AM If my MPG gets too good it means I haven't spent enough time at the track. So back to the track we go. :burnout:

 I had a 66 Chevy Pick-up that was pure nasty. I used to tell my wife that I got 7 mpg, regardless of how hard I drove it. Truth was, I got about 11 mpg soft footing it and about 7 mpg when I had my foot in it. Problem was I couldn't keep my foot out of it!!! LMAO!
So far I've been telling her about 15 mpg in the Vette - just in case my root foot gets happy at random intervals!
Nothingbeatsavette 07-30-2009, 09:30 PM I actually get better highway mileage closer to 80 than 70 lol. Which is fine with me! Average I'd say I run about like everyone else. As far as capacity it does hold 20 gallons although I've never been able to put more than 18 gallons in it no matter how low it gets. Not that I'm trying, it's just been really low a few times from putting it off. I try to keep it fuller now though. One of the best book any C4 owner can get is Cor-Vette Specs 1984-1996 by Mike Antonick. It has the usual description of each model year and random facts, but it also lists a TON of stuff about each year. Everything from common capacities of all the different fluids to things like windshield glass exposed surface area (and other 3 windows), as well as everything about steering, brakes, transmission, all of it. So many things I wouldn't even think about. Great for owners like me that are real mechanically inclined but love learning all they can. Another good buy is the shop manuals, not like the Chilton or Haynes, but the ones the real mechanics use when you take your car in. Those get pretty pricey though.
CorvetteMongo 08-03-2009, 10:28 AM One of the last trips I made in my 88 was up to Buford, Ga...620 miles each way...had the cruise set at 75 and the A/c off most of the time and got 24.1 up and 23.8 on the way back. That's the average for the trip...normal driving around town would get me about 21
96C44Life 08-03-2009, 11:18 AM man that's a long trip..wish my cruise control worked :(
my digital gauge is fairly accurate to the hand method of figuring. I too get somewhere between 16 - 17 in town and 24 -26 on the highway. Right now it shows 11.1 as i just returned from vacation and have been out playing a little.
slrvette 08-03-2009, 03:12 PM I have a hard time believing my gauge. It says I'm getting 24 to 26 mpg. Even though it gets better mileage than my V10 in my pick up, I do feel I don't have to put gas in it that much. Or maybe thats only cause i drive it less than 40 miles in a week....maybe.
speedymph1000 08-09-2009, 05:29 PM My 85 get 18-20 around town and anywhere from 24-28 on hwy, hand calc. My computer shows me within about 1/4mile off of my hand calcs.:burnout:
