What can I do, my last resort will be to take it to the dealer as they want to charge me almost $300 to do an ac check!!!!!! Isn't there a way to see where the heck the stuff is leaking from? I have no clue about this stuff.

What makes you think something is leaking?
When freon (or whatever the gas used today is) leaks it doesn't liquify - it just goes into the air.
Are you seeing condensation dump/puddle when you stop?
The more humid it is the more condensation will puddle when you stop. Don't know about San Diego but here in Santa Barbara we've had a lot of fog which keeps us humid all day....

You can buy a freon leak detector from any large auto parts store. Figure on paying $200 or more for it though.

No, that would typically be coolant from the radiator....
Freon evaporates..

I think you are talking about if someone were to use the leak finding product it will show you where the leak is by leaving a colored trail.

As I do ALL of my own mechanical work, I figured it would cost me at least $200 for a shop to find my refrigerant leak I had several years ago. So rather than pay someone else to find my leak, I bought a leak detector (about $200) and found it myself. Searching all over under the hood and not finding any leak, I finally got inside the car and "sniffed" the A/C vents. BINGO!
The leak was coming from the middle of the evaporator core, and the refrigerant was making it's way inside the car by way of the A/C vents. So if I ever have another refrigerant leak, I now have the means to find it. It was money well spent.

No, it's an an electronic gas sniffer. It buzzes at ever increasing frequencies as you get closer to the source of the leak.

Ouch...you had the worst case AC leak scenario...leaking evaporator.
