My 87 stock vette 31,000 miles, runs mint..
When I changed the oil last week noticed oil back by the drive shaft, did not see exact spot leaking from, have a bad feeling it may be rear main seal? Bought the car last year w/26,000 miles, very mint orig cond. want to keep it that way.Any input of what kind of job I might be in for???

More info? Oil or trans fluid?

If on the D/S more likely from the rear seal on rear of trans.
Engine main seal leak will have oil thrown sideways off convertor. If engine oil at rear of engine could also be leaking oil sensors at rear of engine behind dist; common problem with age.
Problem with "mint" low miles cars is all the seals dry out from lack of use.
then when car is used they leak

Motor oil, is above trans pan ,and under pas floor .A very little under oil pan,but none on garage floor.Starting to smell oil when stoped at lights ect...I plan on driving this car a lot more than prev owner, but do not like the smell of motor oil.I will try to check behind dist, very hard to see with exhaust, and everything else in way from underneath.Maybe a winter project..

While you're back behind the distributor checking for a leak around the oil sending unit, also check the back of the intake manifold where it seals to the block. That is also a very common place for leaks on older motors. I have an 87 as well, and had a leak there.

As the engine's oil pan uses a cork gasket, I'd suggest you re-tighten all of the bolts that hold the oil pan on. Just snug them up some. And as the transmission's rear extension housing seal doesn't get a great deal of oil to it, it tends to wear out fairly quickly. That seal could account for the oil you see back by the driveshaft.

Yours will have two seperate sensors on a common manifold , but this is the location.Easiest to remove dist to access
